Good book for a club player who has focused on tactics

Author Yaroslav Srokovski, a Urkrainian International Master, has written a good instructional manual for some of the key elements of positional chess. Topics include:

* Strong vs. weak pieces (open files for rooks, outposts for minor pieces, diagonals and complexes)
* Pawn configurations (pawn majority, passed pawns, weak pawns)
* King safety
* Minor pieces (knight vs. bishop, the advantages of the bishop pair)

In the context of analyzing relevant grandmaster games, each chapter describes techniques for creating and exploiting an advantage per the topic under consideration. For example, the chapter on strong and weak squares mentions that exchanging off an opponent's defender can help you acquire a strong outpost for a knight, and you see it unfold in Smyslov v. Denker 1946, Polugaevsky v. Donner 1966, and Stolberg v. Botvinnik 1940. Each chapter concludes with a quiz of 5 or 6 positions, which reinforces your understanding.

While it is a fine and useful work, the book is a bit incoherent in targeting its announced audience. The concepts are appropriate for post-beginners, but the author's deep dive into analysis of tactics would be quite formidable for anyone with a rating under Elo 1500. Moreover, someone at the medium club level strength would benefit from learning some concepts that are not in this book, such as:

* The minority attack against a pawn majority
* Pawn levers
* Restricting knights
* Imbalances and trade-offs, such as the fact that some pawn weaknesses (isolated or doubled pawns) can help you control important squares

That said, if you are a medium strength club player who is strong on tactics but not sure what you should be playing for besides checkmate or material gain, this book would be well worth your time and money.

Caution

Srokovski’s book is not a good stand-alone book. If you buy this by itself, you’ll be horribly disappointed. As a stand-alone, it’s more like a 2.5- or 3-star book. I give it 3.5 or 4 stars because it is an excellent supplement for Herman Grooten’s “Chess Strategy for the Club Player.” In fact, they are organized in the same fashion, each chapter corresponding to one of “Steinitz’ elements,” a list of considerations that Steinitz developed (and Lasker formalized) to help anyone assess any position. I’ll begin by talking about why this is a good supplement to Grooten’s book, but if you want to know why it is not good on its own then look to paragraph three.

One of the great things about Grooten’s book is that it gives excellent commentary, drawing out in words what it is that the winning side should do to convert a small advantage into victory. The problem with a book with lots of words and writing is that it will have fewer examples. Thus, if you want a supplement to Grooten, which gives many more examples of particular elements, Srokovski’s book is very good. The winning element is highlighted, and Srokovski must have about twice as many examples as Grooten. Plus, there is some overlap between the games included, which allows for different ways of expressing the same strategies; and that helps further understanding, having someone explain the same ideas in a different way. I also think the problems that Srokovski gives are a little bit easier than Grooten’s (and Grooten admits the difficult of his). Fortunately, Srokovski realizes that the content that he (and Grooten, actually) is teaching is geared toward 1600-2200 USCF (and maybe 2200 FIDE, which equates to between 2270-2300 in USCF rating), though he says it is accessible for 1400 through 1600 level USCF players, too; so his comprehension problems at the end of each chapter felt to be geared toward 1800-1900, mostly.

The reason this book stinks as a stand-alone is that, with as many examples of Steinitz’ elements, there is very little explanation. In fact, the author seems to have written endless variations in some places to fill up space, but gives no explanation. In some places, he does do a good job of giving the critical line that is going to interest the reader, and which is pedagogically significant; but these are hit or miss. He sometimes really misses the boat, so far as not including a very important (and necessary!!!) explanation. A quick flip through the book will make you feel like a GM threw down some variation given by a computer, then throw in annotations –sometimes good, sometimes poor, and sometimes none where something is needed. The structure of the book, just like Grooten’s is very good, insofar as being organized by the categories of Steinitz’ elements (i.e., open files, weak squares, etc.) However, just as Grooten struggled with mixing motifs, which is partly because complex positions in chess are holistic and possess multiple features, Srokovski also has problems.

All in all, get this book is you are getting Grooten’s and decide you want more practice and study (and more examples of games feature fairly isolated examples of Steinitz’ elements). Otherwise, you’d be wise to skip this one. Given that New in Chess has published both, I am not sure why they don’t market these books in this way.

Excellent book for post beginners

I have the paperback not the kindle .Excellent Book for player rated between FIDE ELO 1400 to 1600. However simple reading will not help much. It requires intense studying and also finding out how to fight plans not shown in detail in the book and playing the given positions against a much higher rated opponent. If the given techniques / positions are mastered with all the variations given and also those not touched in detail, then a FIDE ELO 1400 player will reach 1900. My student rated 1400 was able after reading the book and cursorily studying it, to hold two players rated 1750 in similar positions occurring in different tournaments. She however lost on time to a 1920 player in a similar winning position. I am certain a detailed study of the book including learning things unsaid, would help her to win with this 1920 player.

Probably the Best of Three Slang Dictionaries I Skimmed

In the library, I did a side-by-side comparison of this book (Chapman: Dictionary of American Slang, 3rd ed., 1995) with: (a) Spears, Richard: NTC's Dictionary of American Slang and Colloquial Expressions, 3rd ed., 2000 and (b) Green, Jonathon: Cassell Dictionary of Slang, 1998. The advantages of this dictionary over the other two are: (1) some words and phrases are in this book but not the other two (e.g., "love bug," "love me, love my dog"); (2) it gives specific quotations and sources (e.g., "Had Feldstein deliberately low-balled the original numbers? - Newsweek"); (3) it indicates what sort of people originated or might use the word/phrase (e.g. "lot louse... [used in the] circus"); and (4) thorough cross-references are integrated into the body of the dictionary (e.g., "love, see CALF LOVE, FOR THE LOVE OF PETE, PUPPY LOVE"). It has 617 pages and claims to have 19,000 entries, which is between the other two books. On the other hand, the Cassell Dictionary contains a large percentage of the entries in this book as well as many more entries, and it's the oldest of the three dictionaries. Still, if you had to buy only one of the three, this is probably the one to get.

Excellent resource

This dictionary is an absolute must-have for every writer, fiction or nonfiction. We haven't found a better slang dictionary yet. It has virtually all the slang words in there, words that you just won't find anywhere else. One of the very nice and helpful features is that it tells you in what year the word was used first and susequently, and in which publication (book or newspaper, etc.), and how the meaning changed over the course of the decades. The dictionary also has sentence examples on how the word was used, e.g. in which context, so you know exactly when and how to use it in your applications. It's just very interesting to find out the original meaning and usage of certain slang words and to enrich your own vocabulary. We highly recommend it!

One Indispensible Reference

If you're into words, slang, and idioms like I am, then you probably already own a reference book like this and realize that you need at least 2-3 similar books to find the real nuances of meaning that you want.
This book definitely qualifies to be one of them. The definitions are thoughtful and precise, and there are significantly fewer 'disappointments' (at lousy or omitted definitions/terms) than with other books of it's kind.

Absolutely Outstanding!

I found "Embracing Excellence" to be an amazing work! It enabled me to evaluate and measure how I faired in comparison to all the wonderful attributes, and abilities of the ideal woman as described in Proverbs 31. While i know that Proverbs 31 is a idealization of womanhood that would be exetremly difficult, if not impossible too attain in this day, "Embracing Excellence" provides for great introspection, self work and development, which if done correctly inspires women to be of strong character, great wisdom, great compassion, utilizing the many skills that God has gifted her with. Definitely one to recommend for all women striving to be better women of God in their homes, in their marriages and relationships, with their children and in the marketplace whether married or not!

I love Minister Tatem's work! This easy-to-read study was helpful as I embark on my journey to grow closer and closer to God. I had always heard about the "Proverbs 31 Woman", but I had only really been familiar with Proverbs 31:30. This text helped me to analyze the ENTIRE chapter, and it helped me to apply the principles to my own life, and to see how I can improve different components of my own life.

This is a must have devotional! It was a simple read but has plenty of substance. Examining the Proverbs 31 women was a delightful journey through the writings of Ms. Tatum. The true stories and explanations of the Proverbs 31 women made you understand how the scriptures relate and apply to your life. I plan to read it again and share with others.

Superb Translation of One of the Most Important Texts

To my mind, this translation surpasses all others with which I am familiar. The translation (1) has a flowing literary style that does justice to the rich feel of reading Plato's own prose, (2) is remarkably precise in its reflecting of the original language, with the result that, when one notices something interesting going on in the language of the translation, one will consistently find it is reproducing what is found in the Greek. In both these ways, this is a very trustworthy text--the reader can confidently presume to be experiencing Plato's writing. The dialogue itself--Plato's _Phaedo_--has few parallels for philosophical, literary and cultural depth and importance. It is the conversation Socrates has on the day of his death with a number of philosophical admirers. It is a rich discussion of the nature of knowledge, the nature of virtue, the ultimate nature of reality and especially the nature of death itself. The introduction by the translators is also uncommonly good for putting the reader in a position to read the text well. This is the only translation of the _Phaedo_ that I will assign to my classes. This translation is a fantastic accomplishment.

Socrates is unique among philosophers, not just for his place among the early Greek philosophers, but also for the fact that he is the most famous philosopher to never write his own books. What we know of Socrates comes from contemporary accounts and students, most particularly Plato.

Set in 399 BCE, the Phaedo is a reconstruction of Socrates final conversations with friends on the day he died. We do not know when this dialogue was written, but it was probably before The Republic (Plato's most famous work, also featuring the figure of Socrates). Like The Republic, this dialogue features a well developed theory of Forms -- these are introduced gradually here, slowly filling out the details of each step. This develops the story of the caves idea from Plato's earlier work in epistemological, metaphysical, moral, and semantic terms. Plato also advances the 'imperfection argument' here -- the idea that when we sense something, it is never perfectly the thing we are thinking of, and that idea or standard to which we relate what we see, hear, feel, etc. is tying into a more perfect Form.

However, the idea of the soul is rather less developed here than in The Republic. The soul is simply mind, or intellect - all emotions are here placed as bodily aspects. This is rather Pythagorean in a fashion, that only the soul grasps the perfect Forms, and so should consist of nothing but reasoning ability, for emotions distort and cloud the perceptions and judgments.

In the end of the Phaedo, we witness Socrates drink the hemlock, without fear or trembling, as a philosopher should know the value of life and welcome death with a firm hope. The story is almost religious in nature here.

However, there are other possible readings, and this edition opens these up. This translation is part of a series done by the translators and Focus Publishing of the Plato dialogues. It has an introduction and a glossary of Greek terms, as well as a brief bibliography. The translators avoid a clunky translation by doing some interpretative work, but explain their reasonings in the introduction. They argue in the introduction against many traditional renderings of Phaedo, and as such provide an interesting counterweight to the prevailing editions available.

Socrates is unique among philosophers, not just for his place among the early Greek philosophers, but also for the fact that he is the most famous philosopher to never write his own books. What we know of Socrates comes from contemporary accounts and students, most particularly Plato.
Set in 399 BCE, the Phaedo is a reconstruction of Socrates final conversations with friends on the day he died. We do not know when this dialogue was written, but it was probably before the Republic (Plato's most famous work, also featuring the figure of Socrates). Like the Republic, this dialogue features a well developed theory of Forms -- these are introduced gradually here, slowly filling out the details of each step.
However, the idea of the soul is rather less developed here than in the Republic. The soul is simply mind, or intellect - all emotions are here placed as bodily aspects. This is rather Pythagorean in a fashion, that only the soul grasps the perfect Forms, and so should consist of nothing but reasoning ability, for emotions distort and cloud the perceptions and judgments.
In the end of the Phaedo, we witness Socrates drink the hemlock, without fear or trembling, as a philosopher should know the value of life and welcome death with a firm hope. The story is almost religious in nature here.
Grube's translation is lively and accessible, not a dry academic rendering, and certainly no contrived high-formal style that so often distances the classics from modern life. This is serious stuff, but in a mere 60 pages manages to capture much, and Grube's work makes it all the more relevant.
