I thoroughly enjoyed reading Fjelstad´s book and I found it informative, exciting, and above all very well written. Fjelstad is truly honest and frank about the fact that the borderline and narcissist are mentally ill and unwilling to change. She is open about the fact that caretakers too get something from the situation and that it is up to them to break the cycle of caretaking since the BP or NP is not going to change their ways. Fjelstad's advice is well thought out and practical which makes them easier to follow and she provides the reader with specific ideas and examples to how the caretaker can make the changes needed to rid themselves of the power that the BP or NP has over them. . . . [T]he book is excellent material for anyone that is living with or has any involvement with a BP or a NP, close or distant, since the book fosters understanding of the disorders and the need of the caretaker. Margalis Fjelstad, PhD, LMFT, has a private psychotherapy practice in Ft. Collins, CO, specializing in work with clients who are in relationship to someone who has borderline or narcissistic personality disorder, and she facilitates groups on Caretaker recovery. She has previously been an Adjunct Faculty member at Regis University in Colorado Springs and at California State University in Sacramento.

One of the Best!

This book was like reading about several people in my life AND my interactions with them. It further solidified my dawning awareness that these people will not change (not easily and maybe not at all and maybe never). It validated many of my feelings and experiences related to dealing with the BPD & NPD. It gave me HOPE that my life can improve...BUT it will be up to me to make it happen for myself. Waiting for them to care, be kind, share, reciprocate, show empathy, be helpful, be responsible, be less crazy/angry/needy/manipulative is a waste of my time and my life. The author gives many suggestions for what I can do to make my situation better - very helpful as my boundaries have been bludgeoned by the BPD and NPD people for pretty much all of my life. Duh, hello. Why did I not realize all of this on my own many years before? My own thinking was not as clear as it would have been if I had not been subjected all my life to the BPD/NPD authority figures & significant others. The author lays out some very helpful guidelines about my responsibilities vs my caretaking behaviors. It feels like permission to just be a responsible, nice, caring person rather than take on the job of making all these crazy people happy!! Woohoo! I have a long way to go, but the path is a lot more clear after reading this book.

Having been raised in a family with a borderline/narcissist mother, and an enabling father, I have been in denial most of my life about how dysfunctional our life was. This book has forced my eyes open in a way that 7 years with my therapist could not do. Granted, as a recovering Caretaker, I was ready to hear the whole truth about how dysfunctional I had become and how much work is ahead of me to fix myself and not the other people in my life, but this book got into every nook and cranny of dysfunction and called it what it was. I am shocked at all the connections I never made and dismayed at how much I still need to change but I am going to do the hard work ahead. Dysfunction has affected at least 4 generations, I want the buck to stop with me so my kids have a better role model.

Excellent, insightful, and to the point

This book offers clear insights without delving into the author's past or too many case studies. It provides understanding of the BP/NP personalities as well as the Caretaker's, and why we are inclined to get hooked into these toxic relationships. It gives clear and hopeful advice to Caretakers on how to extricate themselves from a borderline/narcissist, and gives a clear picture of the importance of doing so. This is one of the most USEFUL self-help guides I have read in a long time! I originally borrowed it from a local library but found it so helpful I wanted to own my own copy.
(As for the one star review, the grammatical mistake is only in the web write-up and is corrected on the book flap. The grammar and writing is strong throughout without being too pedantic or technical. A reminder that one should actually read a book before reviewing it.)

So how do you deal with low self- esteem? Most of us humans out there deal with some level of low self-esteem. The first step to take is to get this book, read it, and make sure to be honest with yourself when working on the tasks in this book. This book has five steps for you to follow. Easy, right! Yes, if you take your time and follow through with everything.

A well done book

A fine book, one that give a rich understanding of what happened and why.
Sure, Lee Kuan-yiow transformed the situation. However, it is easy to overlook that Singapore was more than just a bastion of British might, even usurping the Sumatra rubber burning industry as it was more efficient than the Dutch efforts, despite desires of the Dutch to keep that money maker inside its borders. Therefore Singapore was basing a good part of its well being in the early part of this century upon the lack of industry on the Dutch side, mainly because it was a modern city hub of the region at that time and one that provided stable reinvestment.
Other examples are given, like the industrial machining might developing about 1930 because it was the next logical step.
All that was needed was for multinationals to give them the steady workload as they had already done most of the jobs before (as was the case industrial wise in Japan, Germany, and similar countries after WWII, the people's skill was the primary mover).
It may seem like a small issue, but it destroys the myth of Singapore being a backwater and bodes ill for any country trying to rise up in short order from absolutely nothing (no examples of such, actually, in modern times, though Australia & N.Z. come closest from the periods of 1787-1900 & 1830-1900). It is interesting that in those cases as was similar with Singapore & Hong Kong, migration of an industrious population was the keystone, beyond natural resources.)

extremely useful discussion of Singapore, pre-1959

There are many texts about the development of Singapore from when it achieved self-government in 1959. This book does not try to compete with them. Instead, most of it deals with the period between about 1869, with the opening of the Suez Canal, and 1959. Much of the analysis about the early period contradict popular mythology about Singapore -- the country was not backwards and poor when it became independent; in fact, it had a GDP per capital about 1/3 that of the U.K. This book describes how this came to be the case.

It also discusses the more recent period, but the material there is similar to what is available elsewhere. The five stars I'm giving the book are for the earlier chapters.

I have heard representatives of third world nations describe their development plans as being "Singapore like," meaning that they plan to rocket from poverty into selling intellectual and financial services in a short period of time. I wish more of them understood the special circumstances that allowed Singapore to make the leap, and the length of time that it really took. This book is valuable for anybody considering similar problems.

Okay but not what I was expecting

I have all the old VHS tapes of the animated Beginner's Bible stories. I had hoped (expected) this to be a re-release of those videos with curriculum to go with them.

The curriculum is on the DVD disk if you put it into the computer. It looks great. I think I can really use this curriculum with my preschoolers. It came with a Beginner's Bible. I already have one, but it's nice to have a fresh copy. That part is all good.

But the videos... Oh I'm so disappointed! They are not the animated stories from before. Instead they are pictures from the Beginner's Bible that sort of move (you know, they wiggle or slide across the screen but not animated) with the voice of someone reading the text. I can tell they are not going to hold the interest of many preschoolers.

I will not be using the videos. I'd rather just read the stories myself and put expression into the stories that way.

Somebody please re-release the old animated stories on DVD!

New version not as good as the old version

My sister had an older version of this when she was young and my mom recommended it for my son. Comparing the two, they redid the whole book at some point. At first it seems basically the same, just different wording and similar but new pictures. However, after going through it with her, implications in the wording, although subtle, seems less biblical. After several examples, and seeing how the new version wording gives different implications, we agreed to just use my sisters old version for him. Im disappointed they changed it. Also, not worth the cost, which is much more than I would expect.

i want part 3 now

Okay first off let me say this i'm pissed off LML why you ended the book like that? That shit isn't right my heart dropped when the caller said what they said smh!!! Part 2 takes right off from part 1 and it's even more JUICY... Part 2 "LOVE, ENVY,DEATH& BETRAYAL" is in the air. Some ppl scared to give their heart away because of past experiences, Then there's innocent people getting caught up in wars they have nothing to do with , Jealousy coming in from outsiders/insiders which lead to people doing things out anger & embarrassment!! Snakes come in all sizes and sex never discriminate. Everyone that smile with you ain't ya friend and every sorry isn't genuine... & i'll leave it at that buy the book and read the juiciness yourself if i could give it more stars i would #TeamFrogAndSienna

Oh my Goodness! Rasheed, I tip my hat off to you because this sequel gave me so much life! Again, I finished this book in a few hours because the it is so entertaining, action packed, gritty, and fast paced! I was flipping through the pages, dying to know what would happen next. I feel like I personally know these characters. Sienna was off the chain in this one, but she and Frog still remain solid! I was all for her slicing Kennedys face up because she deserved it! I felt like Kennedy was a snake before all the drama, so no tear was shed for her! Now she got my girl Kema under fire...smh! I also felt Jermiah's pain as he suffered over Chopper. He loved her and his emotions took over and left him scarred and I hope he is the one to end Melvin! I'm happy Fantasy found love and I cant wait till she returns to the streets. I'm nervous to start part 3 because I have fallen in love with Frog and it will shatter my heart if he is not okay, lol...so serious! As I mentioned about part 1, this book is the dirty truth! Raw and untamed and I loved everything about it. Patiently waiting to see this masterpiece on the big screen...Yes, the book is that good!

this is a wonderful collection of quirky plays

So what if Christopher Durang, Dorothy Parker and David Sedaris combined DNA? You just might get David Ives.
Witty and cerebral, Ives comments on relationships, language and mortality in some of the cleverest one-acts to ever find their way into print. All the works have a Tom Stoppardian-esque command of the English language. Especially in "Foreplay, Or The Art of the Fugue" and "Philip Glass Buys a Loaf of Bread" is his impeccable command of ordering words into almost symphonic patterns best displayed.(Hey, it also helps to know a little about Philip Glass, who was a postmodern musical innovator and it is his musical phrasing Ives mimics in "...Buys A Loaf...")
Some of these plays deal with modern relationships. "Sure Thing" continually backtracks the forming of its 2 characters' relationship with each other by allowing them unlimited "re-dos" when they make a social or relational faux pas, until the "perfect" pattern for falling in love is found.
"Ancient History" is perhaps my favorite out of all the plays. It has two very real, very funny, very sympathetic romantic characters that will constantly remind you of yourself. Jack and Ruth argue, banter and raise issues we're all familiar with in a way that makes you laugh until you realize how sad it really is.
Ives has no trouble taking fellow playwrights down a peg or two as well. "Speed-The-Play" requires an elementary knowledge of David Mamet to really appreciate how hilarious (and accurate) it is.
All of the other pieces are wonderful and hilarious. "English Made Simple" and "Variations on the Death of Trotsky" were probably meant to be read anyway. "Mere Mortals" is a witty commentary on man's ego and inner thought life. "Words, Words, Words" is an exestential little work where Ives explores the actual possiblity of chimps, left alone with typewriters long enough, cranking out 'Hamlet'.
Think of it as excersize for your mind. Do a few yoga stretches and enjoy!

Taking the English Language to an Art Form

In these days of cookie-cutter plays, where an intellectual evening is watching David Copperfield making his career disappear, it is refreshing to read anything that challenges one to think. All In The Timing succeeds, with Ives mastery of the English language and timing being the key to the cleverness of the play. These series of plays are not slap-stick, nor are they Checkov, but an intellectual medium for one who has apparently a bit ahead of his time. While some will find the read of some of the plays difficult (The Universal Language and Phillip Glass Buys a Loaf of Bread). These plays, in particular, are for enjoying on stage, rather than read. But for the most part, this collection is an enjoyable evening of intellectual theater.

David Ives is a comical genius!

This collection of plays has opened my mind to different ways of writing and reading. As a high-schooler, I was looking for a one-act play to direct, and I was certainly given a wonderful choice by Ives. He is especially innovative, considering that he manages to connect music to his writing : "Foreplay, or the Art of the Fugue" was written in the style of a fugue, and "Variations on the Death of Trotsky" is written similarly to variations on a theme of music. "Phillip Glass Buys a Loaf of Bread" has incredible rhythmic qualities, and overall, I think that "All in the Timing" is a first-rate set of plays, worth anybody's time.
