About the Author
A chemist by training, Gerhard Gottschalk received his PhD in microbiology in 1963 from the University of G?ttingen, Germany, before becoming a post-doc at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1970 he was made a full professor for microbiology in G?ttingen, where he also served as president between 1975 and 1976. He was a visiting professor in UC Davis in 1973 and UC Berkeley in 1979, and head of the Laboratory for Genome Analysis
at the Institute of Microbiology and Genetics in G?ttingen from 1999 to 2007. He has received numerous awards, including the Philip Morris Prize for cutting-edge technology, the Winogradsky Medal, the Emil von Behring Prize and the first class German National Medal of Honor. Professor Gottschalk is a member of the G?ttingen Academy of Sciences, the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, an honorary member of the
Israeli Society of Microbiology, and a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. He was president of All European Academies (ALLEA) from 1998 to 2000 and president of the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities from 2003 to 2007.

Excellent text. The content is similar to other general microbiology texts but presented in a unique and more engaging manner. The body of the text is presented as a conversation where a microbiologist responds to questions from an intelligent non-scientist. The explanations are clear and include quotes from leading microbiologists. More detailed information is included in a second section. As a bonus, it costs less than half what other intro texts go for.

Too little information -- too much information

I was a little disappointed by this book, but that could be because I was expecting something else. I was hoping for a general overview over micobes, but this book went too deep many times so that I lost interest. I felt like in biology class back in school. Way too much information unless you really, really want to study this subject. I skipped parts of some chapters because I really didn't care for the chemical intricacies for certain cell processes.

On the other hand the book doesn't go too much into different classes of bacteria and viruses. So at times I wanted to have more information.

While a lot of the chapters are very interesing, they didn't connect at all. Some chapters talk about evolution, some chapters about a brief history of antibiotics, and so on.

Anyway, I'm looking for a better book about learning more about microbes.

Good Draft

This book definitely has some interesting anecdotes which are likely true. He really puts himself out here with naming everyone.

I only read the Kindle edition, and I assume it is the same as the print edition, but it almost seems like a draft. There are small grammar and punctuation errors, especially with the use of apostrophes. It is disjointed in areas, and repetitive in places.

Interesting read, but a bit hard work in places due to the writing (or lack of editing).

Pure Lust is Brilliant! I love this series already!!

M.S Parker and Cassie Wild are a brilliant writing duo, and I know that each time I turn a page or open a novel I am going to be dazzled or taken to new heights by their brilliance.

Pure Lust is absolutely brilliant its about Gabriella Baine who is an assistant to a writer and one day dreams of becoming a writer on her own she lives in New York with her roommate Kendra who is a model for a prestigious modeling/fashion agency. Gabriella goes on an interview that Kendra sets up for her with the agency for an assistant position when she runs into photographer Flynn McCreary, words are exchanged sparks fly theres some major sexual attraction and magnetism and the two get into a heated and passionate session. But does it end well? Will he be her Prince charming? Uh not likely turns out he ends up being a snarky bit of something else but your going to have to read the novella to find out what this is one steamy novella and I mean, it is sexually charged fog up your e-reader kind of steamy. Its full of action, drama, suspense and some crazy curve balls that our brilliant authors throw into the plot. And it ends with one heck of a cliff hanger! I for one cannot wait to see where this series is going to take us!

Another amazing job by M.S. Gabriella & Kendra are roommates and struggling until Kendra gets a model job. Going to a job interview Gabriella was hoping to get the job until Flynn sabotages for his on intentions. Meeting again at a party Flynn & Gabriella you could feel the sexual tension and he offers her a job. When going for the job Gabby & Flynn give on to the sexual tension. I really liked the connection between Gabriella & Flynn until he became cold. But meeting Edward was her fantasy coming true. The connection they have and how easy they are together I would read their story all the time. But will secrets destroy her happily ever after? I can't wait to read what happens next because I need to know what will happen next

HOT new series by M.S and Cassie!! Weekly Wonders!!!

In this new series by M.S Parker and Cassie Wild, we are treated to weekly installments of Gabriella’s adventures to find her Prince Charming.

First it seems like she is going to find him in a photographer but I don’t think so, he seems to just be an egotistical jerk. He talks her into doing things that I don’t think she really would’ve done had he not been a conniving ass.

Next we have the perfect gentleman that will not divulge his last name. He seems to be the ONE. The only problem, she has no idea who he is, really!!! No last name, no idea where he works, the only thing she knows is that he is rich as all get out and he has family issues.

She starts dating perfect gentleman and falls hard! I love the way she thinks it is going to fast, but then decides that you cannot put a time on how relationships should work. I think that when you fall you fall, you have no control!

I am totally going to be on the edge of my seat waiting for the next eBook to download to my Kindle every week. I cannot WAIT to find out what happens after she finds out who his brother is….DAMN!!!!

Empowerment rather than the opiate?

The word "Leadership" in the title of this book is the Trojan horse that suggests that those who are in or want to be in leadership positions order this book off the Internet and drag it within their mental and emotional gates. Reading it, we wake up to the fact that the leadership the authors speak of has nothing to do with (and everything to do with) leadership in the normal sense of the word. The key is the adjective that precedes it, i.e., "personal." The book is actually a presentation of a self-development methodology or spirituality of being and doing that consists of two principles (mindfulness and creativity) and six practices or steps for cultivating those principles.

The authors represent a training enterprise, Personal Leadership Seminars, LLC, whose programs are delivered by experienced interculturalists using the methodology described in the book. The methodology itself is a combination of humanistic psychology, spiritual disciplines and philosophia perennis that bloomed in the late 1960's and has continues as a subculture in the USA as well as abroad. There are no surprises here, just a well knit set of mental and emotional disciplines and an invitation to a community of support.

If not new, what is the currency of such training and a book about it? The key is, as the authors point out, practice. A bankruptcy of ethics and spiritual discipline as well as the deep desire for it has resulted in a search for fundamental well-being that has led many into extremes of religious fervor where self-immolation and Armageddon are seriously embraced and encouraged by the so-called political, religious, and military "leaders" of the day. So, Personal Leadership proposes an alternative set of spiritual practices aimed at bringing about awareness of self, one's internal and external environment and how the "others" live in them for us so that our responses are creative rather than destructive, real rather than stereotypical, affirming rather than conflictual.

We might say that "leadership starts at home" in the sense that enlightened leaders in politics, business and organizations will do well to have their personal act together if our world is to find its way out of the wars and destruction that much of its current leadership has presented it with.

But it is not only leaders who need personal leadership, in the sense that following the crowd and the demagogue is as much a part of the problem as are those who maladroitly direct the world scenarios. It is trite but true that people get the leaders they deserve.
So there is a set of values here that eschews knee-jerk certainties, "If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him!" The silver bullet is practice, practice, practice. Shakyamuni's dying words are reputed to have been, "Be a lamp unto yourselves."

Today's psychologically-honed expertise for economic and political manipulation is not going unobserved. Naomi Klein in her recent book Shock Doctrine how a runaway economic paradigm enables political and financial leaders to manipulate populations through fear and misinformation. Psychologist Clotaire Rapaille, in The Culture Code points out how people around the world live and buy as they do behaving according to predictable culture codes, largely driven by unexamined unconscious urges--the lizard brain. In other words, great careers and great fortunes are to be made if the blind can be encouraged to invite the blind to lead them, and are satisfied with the cake crumbs that fall from their masters' tables. Whether one blows the whistle on these practices or strives to make a buck off them, the effect is the same, more of the same, more of the same...

This book shows us a way of stepping outside the maelstrom. It is long overdue, particularly in the sense that the intercultural field has largely ignored psychological and spiritual factors in the development of intercultural competence in personal development. This negligence has to a great degree contributed to the irrelevance and ignorance of intercultural work for religious, now become political contexts.
Personal Leadership is evidence that the Buddha and the Tao and Fritz Perls are still pointing the way to enlightenment for those willing to take the steps to seek it. The payoff of personal leadership is in the experience itself, as the many personal accounts of self-engagement in the book illustrate--the book is worth reading for these alone. Coming to see the self and the world more directly and clearly is empowering, but there is no cheap grace. Fortunately we learn to drag ourselves kicking and screaming, leading ourselves to places in and life where we have not been before.

In a sense, this is a book that I didn't know that I was waiting for until I read it--an impetus to do more and better of what has made me do somewhat well in directing my own life and enriching and empowering those around me.

"Letting this book into my psyche" strongly reminded me that Moses, Jesus and Mohammed have left great spiritual traditions with powerful disciplines for development that unfortunately lay dormant but capable of being aroused even in those whose starting point is fundamentalist and authoritarian. Who will have the creative flash that will lead to taking greater benefit from sunnah, theosis, the Exercitia Spiritualia and the halakah etc., in those traditions that so many people feel themselves a part of, the empowerment rather than the opiate?

Is it only me questioning how I could keep my enthusiasm and inspiration in living life with purpose and vision at the same level as I was reading a great book like "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle? I was thrilled to find the answer in this book, Personal Leadership! With a simple but profoundly practical methodology of two principles and six practices, Personal Leadership has given me a tool to improve my competency to take better actions for various challenges at work as well as to expand my personal life aligning with my vision.

Don't bother

Don't waste your money on this book or any "SEO" books written by Sean Odom, including those written under "pseudonyms", including Mike Monahan, Jason McCormick and Sean M. Farrell. These are all one and the same person which he uses to promote his multitude of SEO related businesses, giving the appearance not only of having multiple "SEO Experts" working for his companies but also of creating the illusion that his various companies are not actually related. Thus he can give the appearance of objectivity when, as one person/author, he "recommends" another of his business to readers/customers (which is basically any business or company or service he recommends aside from the obvious exceptions like Google and Microsoft). Extremely good information but full of grammatical errors and typos.

Sean is clearly an expert and I recommend this book even if you don't plan to optimise your site because it will show you what is required to raise your site's visitor numbers. Armed with the information, you can decide whether it's necessary and assess how many man-hours it might take. That's a useful piece of information if you need to negotiate a price for the work.

Sean does, however, assume a certain amount of knowledge on the reader's part. For example, if you've never heard of a "robots.txt" file, you might want to read a more basic manual first.

On the downside, the book has not been copy-edited. Considering that Sean insists that you should check your website for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation, it's disappointing to find that this book is full of such errors. Indeed, it lowers Sean's credibility and would make me think twice about letting him type anything on any of my sites. Basic mistakes such as the use of "your" instead of "you're" are especially worrying but there are also words missing, words duplicated and words misspelt - the combination of errors making some paragraphs difficult to understand. Frankly, this book is a "beta version" and should never have been released as it is. Please, Sean, get it fixed.

About the Author

Mark Morris became a full-time writer in 1988 on the Enterprise Allowance Scheme, and a year later saw the release of his first novel, Toady. He has since published a further thirteen novels, among which are Stitch, The Immaculate, The Secret of Anatomy, Mr Bad Face, Fiddleback and Nowhere Near An Angel. His short stories, novellas, articles and reviews have appeared in a wide variety of anthologies and magazines, and he is editor of the highly-acclaimed Cinema Macabre, a book of fifty horror movie essays by genre luminaries. The Deluge is all wet.

This book promises an exciting thrill ride through a flooded planet, presumably with monsters and the trials of a post-apocalypse civilization to trouble our survivors. What it delivers is, sadly, more of a muddy mess, hampered by a lack of satisfying answers, shallow characterization, and action sequences which quickly devolve into murky confusion. I left this book with the names of the characters already fading from my mind -- never a good sign. It's good escapism for an afternoon, but it's never going to be a classic, and honestly, there's better escapism out there.

Fantastic Idea, Average Delivery

I ran out and bought this book as soon as I read the premise, but ultimately, was slightly disappointed in the outcome. Although the quality of the writing was smooth and the action moved along fast, I would have liked to have seen the survivors deal with the flood element a lot more. Instead, the water disappears less than 50 pages into the book. I also felt the character development was a little light and I was troubled with some inconsistent logic when fighting the enemy towards the end. My only other complaint was that I would have liked a few answers as to the origin of the flood and the evil that it brought forth. I'm not saying I need everything tied up perfectly, but a little more information and details about the enemy would have been nice. Also, I thought the author took the easy way out with the ending he chose. If you enjoy apocalyptic fiction -- don't get me wrong -- this is a solid read, but ultimately, nothing you haven't read before.

Good but not great

I enjoyed it and was anxious to read and finish it beyond just commuting to and from work on the train.

But like others have said here, I was disappointed in the ending. Unless the author plans a sequel. Neither the cause of the flood nor the creature's origin was explained. (I kept thinking the creatures may have come from the deepest part of the ocean and washed up with the flood waters. But who knows?)

The characters were believable except towards the end where all of a sudden there are so many more characters introduced then disposed of.

I guess I just hated the ending.

This book, which has been published well before the dust has even settled from the Global Financial Crisis, is quite simply the best written, most up-to-date, and clearest work available for understanding the state of international banking regulation, what went wrong and what has to be addressed. There are a number of quite good specialist books, but none that I am aware of provide the comprehensiveness, broad overview and clarity (on a highly technical subject) that this book does. I recommend Schooner & Taylor to anyone who wants to gain a reliable and balanced overview of the state of global bank regulation.

great research book of marvel 70s rarities

Pretty strong collection of early 1970s Marvel Merch in all its' splendor.
A research book of this caliber deserved hardcover treatment,
but Pages are high quality paper and reproductions.
Suggested values are laughable on some items,
most notably the Third Eye Posters which sell for extremely more than valued here.
But if you loved Marvel Comics in the early half of the 70s, it's a must have pilgrim.

About the Author
Albert Camuswas born in Algeria in 1913. During World War II, he joined the Resistance movement in Paris, then became editor-in-chief of the newspaper Combat during the Liberation. A novelist, playwright, and essayist, he is most famous for his novels The Stranger and The Plague. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957.

Justin O'Brien is Editor, Current Affairs at UTV. He lives in Belfast.

Absolute horrible version of a great collection

Horrible copy of an awesome collection of essays. This is clearly someone who made the book themselves using Amazon's Createspace book service. First off, the cover is highly pixelated & the Text format inside is horrible. One of the pages stops mid-sentence, mid-page & continues on the next page. Just horrible.

Do not recommend this version

When I got this I thought I'll just get the cheap version cause who cares what the cover looks like as long as the content is there

I guess I got what I paid for, the cover image is low quality and the formatting of the text inside is kind of awkward even though I dont really mind.
What got me was the translation, it's weird and has a lot of typos and its almost like a literal translation, it's unreadable for me. The syntax is off.

A classic work in existentialism

Albert Camus was a French existentialist philosopher of the 20th century who was highly intelligent and wrote some fantastic books in his time.
The Myth of Sisyphus is obviously a classic in philosophical literature and in my opinion this work is one of the most thought provoking books in recent times. The books theme heavily revolves around this quote from Camus:

"There is but only one truly serious philosophical problem, and that is suicide. Judging whether life is or is not worth living amounts to answering the fundamental question of philosophy."

Albert Camus contended one must rebel against the logical conclusion on an existential and practical basis. This makes a lot of sense in a universe where philosophical naturalism is presupposed to be true, therefore he was honest that it was impossible to live as if moral nihilism was true. It would mean that one could only accept personal concerns for matters but no longer be able to argue for any rightness or wrongness about any significant matters due to the fact that one could not account for values or meaning beyond one's only subjective account. This is a case where prudential value and moral value come into conflict.

This quote also has much relevance with respect to the book:

"Hence the intelligence...tells me in its way that this world is absurd. Its contrary, blind reason, may well claim that all is clear...But despite so many pretentious centuries and over the heads of so many eloquent and persuasive men, I know that is false"

Absurdity is a topic that is touched upon in this book. Albert Camus goes into this subject of absurdity and speaks about Sisyphus who is known in Greek mythology as someone who lived a life that entailed pointless meaning, as he was subject to endlessly repeating the steps of rolling a boulder up a hill, only to see it roll down again. This essay concludes with statements in respect to the absurdity of man finding his purpose, meaning and unity in life. Albert Camus finishes with what he perceives is the best way to handle this outcome, and that is through `revolt'.
