Too much ego

I enjoyed this book - the cover's mountain scenery, a review of raja yoga, and the rendering of experience to poetry. But many chapters close with boasting, hardly contained. And that contradicts the overall message, surrender of ego to embrace the divine. Then there was the author's YouTube statement that Babaji is "der feurer" which is to say "the leader." But why that choice of words? Freudian slip? A cultural thing? Is it that the Indian culture is more deferential to authority than the American? What seems harsh or even wacko to me, might be nothing to someone else.

A "must-have" book for the collector of German coins!

Krause Publications has brought under one cover the vast numismatic production of the German cities, states, and colonies from 1600 to date. Every serious collector of German coins needs this book. This book is a real bargain because it eliminates the need for the German coin collector to purchase Krause's regular world coin books that are now broken down into different centuries (this single volume pulls information out of the four volumes that would otherwise be required).
Here are some good points:
1. Collectors of Thalers will be pleased to see Davenport numbers incorporated in their favorite areas.
2. Numerous illustrations aid the collector in identifying unknown coins.
3. Prices appear in at least four grades for each coin.
4. Helpful sections include an "Instant Identifier" with illustrations of various coin designs specific to a particular area, and "Legend Abbreviations" which give the collector a big leg up in identifying coins based on the legends alone.
5. A decent attempt is made at listing Pattern pieces (those coin designs never officially adopted).
Here are a few areas where the book could be better:
1. Prices appear to reflect the American market for German coins which, in many cases, is substantially lower than the German market for the same coins.
2. Some of the States higher in the alphabet (Saxony, for example) seem to be lacking data on the earliest coins.
3. I'd like to see the Pattern section expanded and possibly include the numbers from Schaaf's reference book on this area.
4. Cross-references to Jaeger (the German "Guidebook") would be helpful to our friends across the big pond.
Lest I appear too critical, let me state that the positive impact of this book and the obvious time and effort that went into its production are immensely important. No other reference on German coins comes anywhere close to matching the sheer volume of information contained herein. No other single book opens up the world of German coins like this book does. Thus, whether you're a beginning or an advanced collector, this book should be an essential part of your reference library.

The best I've seen

Unless you speak/read German, this is as good as it gets. Not only is this most comprehensive compilation of relative values of German States issues, but the other information helps with the overall history lesson. This book is an ABSOLUTE MUST for anyone at the German coin beginner/intermediate level of collecting, and I suspect it has become quite useful to the advanced collectors/dealers.

I sleep with this under my pillow so when I look at the auctions at 2 AM I know what I am looking at.

I collect porcelain Notgeld that this book is useless. However, I also collect German States coins and this book comes in handier than the generic world coins catalogs.

* Over 18,00 photos
* Over 60,000 listing

Featuring:
* Accurate guides for determining intrinsic values and authenticity
* Actual silver weights (ASW)
* Actual gold weights (AGW)
* Actual platinum weights'
* statements of fineness
* Total weight of coins
* Silver and gold bullion values charts

The values may be out of date but with the addition of an online currency converter, you can get a ballpark feel for the price.

There are no color plates but the picture are quite clear.

Each of the German states has a small description of location and history.

The other thing that is missing in this catalog is a description of the person on the coin and what the different symbols represent. I know some from history but must evades me.

Helén Anderson is Professor of Business Administration at Jönköping International Business School, with a concentration in Marketing. Her research interests are in business dynamics, innovation, strategic change, and mergers and acquisitions.

Virpi Havila is Professor of Business Studies at the Department of Business Studies at Uppsala University, with a concentration in Industrial Marketing. Her research interests include mergers and acquisitions, project ending and effects of ending business-to-business relationships.

Fredrik Nilsson is Professor of Business Administration at Uppsala University with a concentration in Accounting. His research is focused on understanding the role of control systems in formulating and implementing strategies.

If you are buying this book to help with your ATI testing, do not buy it. It is filled with great information, but it does not help with the protractor test at all. If you are planning to take the protractor test, I recommend catching up on your fundamental information before buying this book to study with.

Wonderful study tool

this ati book for community health helped out so much on my ati proctured community health test. I would recommend reading everything. I also would recommend doing the practice test along with it . It really was a lifesaver and I made a level three which is amazing. I really would recommend purchasing the book instead of doing the ebooks because it seemed to help me out with raising my score tremendously. I will be purchasing the rest of the books as they are needed for my program no doubt about it.

Caitlin was born blind, and when, newly arrived in tenth grade, she is offered a chance at an experimental procedure to give her sight, she leaps at it, despite previous disappointments. When she returns from the Tokyo hospital in which she underwent the procedure, it seems a failure. Soon enough, though, she discovers that, instead of reality, she is perceiving the Web. What’s particularly interesting is the background noise. Something strange is floating around behind the nodes of normal Webspace; a closer look reveals that, whatever it is, it’s not just meaningless noise. Caitlin’s story alternates with those of Hobo, a chimp whose claim to fame is being one of the first two apes to video-chat online; an entity of mysterious provenance; and a Chinese dissident blogger who is quite curious about why everything from outside China is blocked. Sawyer’s take on theories about the origin of consciousness, generated within the framework of an engaging story, is fascinating, and his approach to machine consciousness and the Internet is surprisingly fresh. --Regina Schroeder

Only the beginning and more wonders to come

Robert J. Sawyer's "[...]" opens up a few cans of worms and leaves us with a cliffhanger at the end so we can all speculate on what happens next. Without giving too much away, a brilliant but blind teenage girl is enlisted by a Japanese scientist for experimental eye surgery and when it is all done, a lot of interesting things occur. Meanwhile on the other side of the country there is a gorilla painting pictures of its caretaker and in China there is a suspicous avian flu outbreak that results in the Chinese government covering up some drastic action it took to deal with it. I expect Book Two will deal with these secondary issues in a bit more detail and find a way to link them to the main story.

Sawyer's writing style is approachable even for those who are not big Sci-Fi readers. Certainly the science is there (and accurate) but his books tend to deal more with the culture of the day and the way the characters respond to that while the science flutters by in the background. This was an enjoyable start, a fairly quick read, and I am looking forward to the next one.

Sawyers Best

Wake is thought provoking,a good read and an introduction to modern thought on human perception / pattern recognition. The side-play concerning the heroine and her father is not well done and raises more questions (such as why did her mother marry this bozo?)--however the concept of growing up with contrasting affecting by ones parents is a valid one.

The plot is pure science fiction and points to a plausible future maybe 30 years from now. The reader should pause now and again to think abut the issues Sawyer brings up on modern thought / science.

Wake held my interest to the end and is a kind of "feel-good" book. I can recommend it with out reservation

Sawyer plays to his strengths

WWW: Wake has all the hallmarks of a great Sawyer novel: intriguing premise, educational bits of knowledge spread throughout, making you feel like you are reading a great Chricton novel or a very engaging textbook, loads of Canadian trivia, and, most importantly, three-dimensional characters that live in the mind's eye and are people you care about.

Unlike most of his novels, where the main character is a middle-aged male Canadian intellectual with some sort of marital conflict, the star here is a 15-year old American math whiz who just happens to be blind and female. Another favorite Saywer novel, Factoring Humanity, also featured a female lead and the same sense of wonder and emotional depth is present here as well. Only one minor character comes off as a bit cliche during a conflict with Caitlin. I'll let you guess which one that is.

There are at least three plotlines that intersect here and, while this initial volume is fairly benign, with one big exception, there are hints at some sinister goings-on for parts two and three.

I never read his dinosaur trilogy, but this is at least as good as his Neanderthal triology, even though it has more of a leisurely pace, and there is not as much world-building going on. I am looking forward to the next volume. I just hope the story doesn't come true by then!

On the cover of Phenomenology of the Visual Arts - James Elkins says something about this being the most systematic phenomenology of the visual arts. Rest assured it's more than that - it's the most comprehensive philosophy of the visual arts ever written by anyone. Everything from drawing to digital is in there, and what's more is that Crowther concentrates on whats embodied in the visual work itself - instead of the usual emphasis on 'theory' that remains stuck on reception.
