The Last Champion is a Winner!

Warrior Armand Flambard is alive and Lady Dominie De Montford of Wakeland must have him!

Lady Dominie is on a mission and her former betrothed Armand Flambard is the only one that can help her. She doesn't want to think about the hungry winter everyone at Harwood and Wakeland would suffer if they failed to keep the wolf from their door. Armand is her last and only hope to keep the wolf at bay. That wolf is Eudo St. Maur, former Earl of Anglia; Wolf of the Fens.

About five years ago, Dominie learned her beloved Armand, her father Baldwin and brother Denys were killed in battle at Lincoln. It was only recently she learned Armand may not have died, but actually joined an Abbey about 30 miles away and was now known as Brother Peter. One of the reasons for Armand's abandonment was because Baldwin had broken an oath after he pledged allegiance to old king Stephen thus ending Armand's birthright entitlement to Harwood. Wakeland and Harwood now solely belongs to the De Montfords. Armand's guilt for killing Baldwin and Denys and his desertion of the fair Dominie lead him to the cosseted life of a humble monk.

Upon persistent provocation from Dominie for Armand to leave the Abbey and lead the defense of Wakeland and Harwood in a standoff against the evil Eudo St. Maur, Armand promised only to train the occupants, not take up arms himself. Armand could not easily dismiss his vow of non violence or his desire to lead a cloistered life. What would Dominie do if she learned the real deep-seated reasons for Armand's guilt and the actions behind them? How can Armand ever again dismiss his craving for the bewitching Domonie? Is it truly possible for Armand to now completely reject the vows he made so long ago and once again live among the inhabitants of his youth and defend what should have rightfully been his? Would the people of the villages ever fully forgive his abandonment?

Dominie has reservations of her own. Can she allow herself to regain the lost love she had for Armand? If all could be overcome, could lasting harmony be had between them? Will everything be for naught if St. Maur is not repressed?

This well told medieval novel is a typical tale of a battle for peace, land and love. I found this story pleasing and Deborah Hale's telling of it makes it worth your time. It's a quick and easy read.

I just got done reading this book. It is a well written medieval novel. I really felt like I was in medieval England while I read it. The romance between Dominie and Armand was rocky at first but at the end true love won out.

As if motivated by the promise of things to come, Tess slid her hand from beneath his and took the toy; she hesitantly sat on the couch farthest away from Chase. He’d considered demanding she remain next to him, but noticed her chosen seat offered him a perfect view for the demonstration.
After sitting immobile for a minute, Tess finally spoke. “I don’t think I can,” she whispered with genuine regret as she turned off the toy. His disappointment was evident, and she quickly continued, “I want to. I really do. But I’ve never, ever…”
Chase already knew Tess had limited experience with men. She rarely dated and although almost every man she met flirted with her, she seemed totally oblivious to their affections. It was one of the things that he found endearing about her. But he also knew she’d denied herself for too long. It was time for her to experience all those things she’d missed. Tonight he would bring out the wanton he knew she hid beneath her sensible exterior.
“Close your eyes, Tess,” Chase instructed calmly.
She hesitated briefly before complying.
“I’m going to tell you what I want you to do, and you’re going to follow my lead. Okay?”
Keeping her eyes closed, she nodded.
“I’m dying to know what you’ve got on underneath that robe, Tess.”
It took a moment for Tess to make a move, but eventually she lifted her backside off the couch and tossed the bottom flaps of her fuzzy robe up and to the side. She gave Chase a view of the sexiest pale blue panties that he’d ever seen. He was so caught up in the view, he didn’t have time to regret that she’d chosen not to remove the entire robe altogether.

I really enjoyed this sweet romance with a little bit of spice. But I am also an advocate for Authors being recognized and paid appropriately for their work. I think this book is worth at least 2.99 and at 1.99 Choosing Chase is a steal.

Blurb:

Tess would give anything to take Chase up on his offer for a one-night stand, but she's afraid of ruining their friendship. Julie Raust manages to keep a familiar theme refreshing and engaging while she crafts a tail around a saucy BBW Cougar (I hate that word, but it applies).

Character Development/Plot: ★★★★☆
I like Tess. I want to sympathize with her. I think she is a dynamic person. And I enjoy Chase as a character. He has a lot of complexity, is what I think more readers are looking for in a hero of a story.

There are points where the plot is predictable, but not unrealistic. I think for a short it has a pretty well developed plot but certain points could be a little better illustrated (pastry scene). Overall I give it a good, teetering on great rating.

Appearance and Editing:★★★★★

Book Cover is good, I wish a woman was in it as well, but that is a personal preference rather than a critique.

The Romance/The Sex: ★★★★☆

I felt like the author really got this. She had the right amount of development for the perfect level of romance at just the right times. The steamy parts were... Squee. Just Squee. I felt empowered through Tess. It left me feeling more than satisfied.

(Can I just say that my poor husband has to deal with me reading romances all the time... poor guy ;). )

Hero's unrequited love for overweight middle-aged heroine

39y.o heroine can't believe her younger & very good-looking downstairs neighbor would seriously be interested in her. She shrugs off his sexual proposition but it only makes him more resolute in making his intentions with her clearer. He wants her in his bed, in his life. She gives in but expects only one night of mutual pleasure. She doesn't want to get her hopes up and end up with a broken heart. It doesn't take long, however, to get her heart broken. Hearing his friend congratulating him on winning the sex bet confirms what she feared all along. How can Hero convince her otherwise?

Short and sweet. And very steamy. An enjoyable novella with likeable characters, emotionally-involving, and passionate scenes. There's humor, misunderstandings, secrets, insecurities, and heart-warming scenes. It didn't feel rushed. The first few pages with the different locations lost me a bit. But I was on track soon after. What I liked the most about it is the emotional connection between Hero and heroine. Hero has had an unrequited love for heroine since they met 2 years ago. He fell in love with her whole package but, most especially, her caring & kind personality. He didn't consider their age difference a problem at all. Heroine, on the other hand, did. She battled insecurities for most of her marriage, living with a neglectful & unloving husband. Being a widow, middle-aged, and overweight didn't help any. That's why she never considered a romance with Hero. And resorted to other methods to relieve her pent-up sexual frustrations, which actually helped her become more assertive. Her shy pride about it and Hero's consequent responses upon finding out what she did were both funny and hot. What I liked the most is Hero's persistence in showing her how much she meant to him, when she started putting up barriers between them. It was touching and sexy.

Pretty good Cougar story :D

This was a pretty good story. I liked both Chase and Tess and enjoyed their story. It's the first story I've read by the author and I liked it enough I'd try more of her work in the future.

Tess is a nice woman that hasn't had much luck in love. She's a widow and he late husband and her definitely didn't have a good relationship. This has left her with confidence problems. She's lived in her current apartment for 2 years and her downstairs neighbor and landlord is a younger man named Chase. They're friends and although Tess is attracted to Chase, she does hr best to keep it at friends because she can't see herself as attractive enough to catch Chase's eye for real.

Chase is a good guy. He's been head over heals for Tess for years but never wanted to push her since he values their friendship. However, eventually he's ready to approach her...just hoping she cares about him the way he does about her.

When Chase eventually broaches the subject of them being together Tess doesn't take it well as she fears messing up their friendship (which she's come to rely on). Chase and Tess have a lot to deal with as Chase tries to convince Tess to give him a chance and misunderstandings don't help things along. Chase is very sweet as he does his best to convince Tess he loves her. In the end things work out for a good HEA.

Overall, this was a pretty good story. While I'll admit there were a few minor things that seemed to be missing (i.e I know Tess is older than Chase but I never saw their ages in the story) I thought the story got better as I read and I enjoyed it. I hope there is a book for their friends Roxi and Gage coming up next. :D

A WONDERFUL HISTORIC NOVEL OF AN AMERICAN FLYER IN FRANCE.

WHEN I WAS IN JR. HIGH SCHOOL IN HOUSTON IN 1964, THIS WAS THE FIRST NOVEL I EVER READ. IT LAUNCHED ME ON A LIFETIME OF READING AND A LOVE OF HISTORY. IT'S TREATMENT OF THE "HERO" ALLOWS ALL OF US TO RELATE TO HIM. HE IS JUST A PLAIN YOUNG MAN WITH AVERAGE ABILITIES, AND HAS AVERAGE SUCESS IN THE COCKPIT, OTHER THAN THE FACT THAT HE STAYS ALIVE.
THE BOOK TRACES THE EXPLOITS OF CHARLES SELDEN FROM THE TRENCHES THROUGH FLIGHT TRAINING, THE LAFFAYETTE ESCADRILLE, AND INTO THE U.S. ARMY FLYING CORPS WHERE HE IS SHOT DOWN AND CAPTURED. THE BOOK CLOSES WITH HIS ESCAPE AND RETURN.
THE REGULAR MEN AND WOMEN AND THE HEROS OF HISTORY ARE VIVIDLY PORTRAYED TO THE EXTENT THAT YOU SEEM TO KNOW THEM ALL AND MAKE FRIENDS WITH CHARLES SELDEN. IT'S 1999 NOW AND I HAVE ONLY AVERAGE MEMORY, BUT I'VE NEVER FORGOTTEN THIS SPECIAL BOOK EVEN THOUGH I'VE NOT READ IT SINCE 1964. IT'S THAT GOOD.

Relive the life of an 18 year-old fighter pilot over France

Falcons of France is a novel of flying, World War I, growing up, and the moralities of the time. Written by two American veterans of the Escadrille Layfayette (who later wrote Mutiny On The Bounty), both the action of battle and the routine of the aerodrome are immediately believable. I first read Falcons of France as a teenager, barely younger than the novels characters. Having reread it numerous times over the years since, the saga still facinates, still captivates, and still ends sooner than I would wish. Reading this novel is the closest any of us will ever come to being a young World War I fighter pilot struggling to stay alive in the skies over France.

Wonderful Re-read

This was the first "real" book I read as a kid. From 4th grade through senior year, I read it every Christmas break. I had thought of the book often but, until my sister alerted me to its availability on Amazon, I had not pursued it. I just read it again and was taken once again by its civility in telling the tale of World War I. Written in 1929, it stands the test of time. Reading a book written at a time not far removed from its actual events gives it such legitimacy and intimacy. If you want to encourage your son to embark on the adventure of reading, this would be a good place to start.

A new Paranormal to me

I really liked this book in the beginning, it catches your attention and keeps you engaged. I would have like more detail on what happened to Ambrosia with Wade, show it don't tell it after. That would have been an even better start for this book. Still, it is a great hook in the start.

The book jumps ahead a month later and still has a nice flow. You get to learn about phoenixes and then Ambrosia and Reece are reunited. I thought the whole side plot here sort of fell off, way too easy a resolve. Then it turns into a whole other book. No more suspense now it is a Harlequin style romance with the she's having my baby theme. Still a good read but a sudden change in the flow. It also slows down quite a bit.

I really liked Ambrosia and preferred when things were in her POV, Reece was rather stiff in the narrative. She has a great sass and the perfect amount of spunkiness to carry things off. I actually thought she was too good for him most of the time.

In the end it is a nice romance with a lot less action than I hoped for. I good read but I was hoping for an inferno, instead I was delivered a campfire.

I liked Ms Gilman's writing and she has a definite creative spark. Phoenixes are not common in paranormal reads. This was a rather interesting take on the mythology. I would be interested in seeing more, perhaps a series?

I'm a complete sucker for the odd shifter types, and I've never run across a phoenix shifter before. This book took the lore of the Phoenix and owned it, integrating it perfectly into a new shifter species. The majority of this story covers the first couple months of Ambrosia's pregnancy and her coming to terms with the fact that she'll be having a phoenix baby. There are a few good freak outs before being forced (in a good way) into believing.

Reece is a great guy - willing to step up and take responsibility for his new family, while protecting them from the prejudices of his old family. The blurb really doesn't do the book justice at all. There is plenty of action at the beginning, but it settles down into a very beautiful and emotional romance. Perhaps Sarah Gilman could write another beautiful Phoenix story about Reece's sister. She sounded like she needed a little love in her life.

Very clear explanations and derivations of subjects such as Boltzmann distributions, critial points, thermal expansion, viscosity, etc. The maths isn't too hard, either!

Married In Haste

This is a deliciously funny mystery about Americans, British Royalty, forensic anthropology and getting married in haste.

Not for THAT reason. Dr. Cameron Dawson, marine biologist, gets selected off the honors list to attend a garden party given by the Queen. Due to his brother failing to forward his mail to America, Dr. Dawson doesn't get the invitation until after his return to Scotland, three weeks before the party. Dr. Dawson is less then happy--he's going to have to wear a tie. It's his American fiancee, Elizabeth MacPherson, who is royalty-mad.

The problem: she hasn't been invited. Only spouses can come and she and Dr. Dawson are planning their wedding for next summer. Unless she puts aside the careful plans that are being laid for next year and gets married in the next two weeks. She needs to arrange for leave from her academic job and risk annoying her adviser before getting her degree. The issue is complicated by the fact that Elizabeth's parents are in Hawaii--so she turns to her Aunt Amanda to cope with the wedding. Now that Amanda is off the sauce and out of the crazy bin, she's ready to tackle this small challenge of bringing off a proper Southern society wedding in two weeks.

Complications ensue. Elizabeth considers putting the entire wedding party in kilts. Dr. Dawson's ugly garden gnome goes wandering--lost, stolen or strayed? Cousin Charles goes in search of a lady love. And a local widow gets the word that her husband has just died again.

Yes, that's right.

The main problem with this crazy cozy is that the characters are a bit too much over the top. It's still great fun to read and makes a marvelous antidote any time British Royalty hits the news.

Keeps you laughing

This is one of the best and funniest of the MacPherson series. You won't turn a page without getting a good laugh. MacPherson's crazy family is back. This is a very enjoyable book. I recommend that you read Sick of Shadows first so that you will be familiar with the characters.

This is another great book from Sharyn McCrumb. Elizabeth's cousin Geoffrey reminds me somewhat of Archie McNally, the late Lawrence Sanders character of the McNally series. From Scotland to Georgia to the gnome's travels around the globe, this book is highly entertaining from start to finish!

This was a pleasant surprise! I've been wanting to read Maisey Yates for a while now, and this freebie seemed like a good place to start.

I'm so glad I did! The writing was excellent, and I was surprised by how this short novella packed quite the punch! It was sweet, hot, and emotional.

Best friends to lovers isn't one of my favorite tropes because there's never enough tension for me. I was proven wrong with this one, and that makes me incredibly happy.

I'm definitely going to check out the rest of the series!

I didn't judge this book by its cover. It took a whole four paragraphs to realize I was going to hate it. Here's the fourth paragraph:

"Thanks to Travis Beringer. Who had wandered away from her at some point during the party. Probably looking to get kissed under the mistletoe. Which was the hazard of bringing a date who would never really be your date."

Normally I don't like to isolate direct quotes in a review because ripping them out of context is unfair, but here context is unnecessary. Do you see the problem? There are no complete sentences there, only fragments. The ENTIRE book is like that. First person narration doesn't have to mean disjointed stream-of-consciousness writing. (See the infinitely better "Intrusion" by Charlotte Stein for an example of first person done right.)

What about the story itself? For a minute I thought a compelling mystery was going to come out of the tragic event that kicks off the book, but no. The friend's messy death is just an excuse for the leads to go to a hotel and have boring sex.

Don't bother with this one.

Loved It!

What a way to start a trilogy! Take Me is the prequel to this series. The stage is set and the next three books will lead up to the conclusion. This novella is about best friends Travis Beringer and Sydney Davis and how their relationship revolves after the shocking death of Sydney's roommate at a Christmas party in 2004. I look forward to following the chain of events in the coming books.

The Best Book on Mixing I've Ever Read...

If making great sounding recordings is your goal, but geek speak freaks you out, Fett's Mixing Road Map is the first and only book you'll ever need on the subject. I just read it cover-to-cover in one sitting and loved every page--it's the Dead Sea Scrolls of mixing! You'll finally understand EQ, Compression, Reverb, and Delay, because Fett explains them all in easy to understand, plain English. I'm recommending this book to every musician I know!

The color screen shots alone are worth the price of the book. If you feel daunted by the idea of recording in your own studio, this book will help you overcome your tech phobia before you finish reading it. Keep it next to your recording gear, because you'll use this book if you're a beginner or pro. This is the book you've always wished somebody would write on this subject. Now it's here, and you'll never have to wonder how to record at home again!

Must read for mixers, new and old.

Like the author, I have spent decades learning how to get professional results in mixing. I wish I had had this book when I started. It would have saved me ten years, at least. Having heard a lot of Fett's work, I know he know of what he speaks. This book is worth 10 times it's price, just in the time it will save you getting to the point where you can mix like a pro. Just buy it!

Covers the basics well but was looking for some more advanced technique. It's as good as any other mixing book on the market and I've owned most of them. If you are looking for a general guide to get you started I would recommend this one.
