Highlander meets Star Trek in Wisconsin

I feel kind of bad giving such a poor review to an award winning classic. I'd somehow never gotten around to reading it before, generally preferring anything by Heinlein to everything by anyone else.
First, the good stuff. This is a treasure trove of great themes, such that I have to wonder if George Lucas and Gene Roddenberry might have gotten their original inspiration from it. It's got the Force (literally called the force). It's got the Galactic Council, it's got the lone stranger who doesn't age, it's got transporters and ray guns and alien civilizations. I really have to wonder how many sci-fi tropes of the late 20th century can be traced to this work.
The bad part is that the execution doesn't rise to the same high level. Maybe it's just that I'm too accustomed to more more modern writing styles, but the novel is awkwardly structured. It seems more like a short story that's been padded out to novel length by philosophical musings and descriptions of the scenery.
There are characters whose only purpose seems to be delivering exposition. There is heavy reliance on coincidence driving the plot. There is much telling rather than showing. There are plot lines that have nothing to do with the rest of the story.
The basic philosophy that drives the main character's musings is one that makes me impatient; namely that peace will come when we all throw away our weapons. Apart from its very debatable merits, that philosophy seems refuted by the novel's own climax in which the future of the galaxy is literally determined by use of arms.
In sum. Many wonderful ideas. Not so wonderful storytelling. But it's really incredible to see so many ideas in baby form that seemingly grew up to become fixtures of popular culture.

Old Style Sci-Fi, Well Written, Interesting Concepts

This is a great book, though readers unfamiliar to Simak or the sci-fi genre from 50 or more years ago may find it "different" when compared to modern sci-fi books. I always preferred these older stories, as they seemed to emphasize the story first rather than concentrate on demonstrating motivation for every minor character than enters the story. This story follows that mode, with a heavy emphasis on the concepts. Usually, there is a main character who is affected by the events in the story.

This story revolves around Enoch, who performs a job for others in the galaxy while tasked to keep his involvement secret from other earthlings. Unfortunately, his unorthodox actions are noticed, which precipitates several crises before coming to a solid conclusion. Along the way, Simak provides thought-provoking statements for the reader to chew on. (My personal favorite: Was war an instinctive thing, for which each ordinary man was as much responsible as the policy makers and the so-called statesmen? It seemed impossible, and yet, deep in every man was the combative instinct, the aggressive urge, the strange sense of competition--all of which spelled conflict of one kind or another if carried to conclusion).

I almost graded this as four stars, due to the slow middle of the book. Upon further reflection, the story seemed to slow only because of the great detail the author presented concerning the aspects of his job, and the book would not have had the same impact at the end if the reader was not aware of these details. As with most sci-fi back then, this is a very quick read (231 pages) and worth your time.

Trust the force, Enoch.

I can't believe I found about a half dozen simple editing errors. Basically words in the wrong order. The story is rich in imagery, and there is no doubt that the author is preaching against the use of force as in war. He describes a universal sense of goodwill that can be accessed by those who are sensitive which is facilitated by a talisman that the sensitive can use to spread the feeling of good will to all who are close by. Enoch is not the sensitive, but he finds the sensitive which results in great things for earth. All of this written before Star Wars came on the scene.

An interesting book on one of the most interesting ideas from Nietzsche

I got this book a while back and found it immensely stimulating - I am no philosophy or Nietzsche expert, but had been captured by the idea of the Eternal Recurrence of the Same for while - the previous book i read on it Nietzsche and the Victious Circle by Klossowski was too difficult i found to follow the trajectory of the arguments and ideas, but this book is on point and i found seldom a dry page.

How to build a comprehensive model,and live to talk about it

Penny's book is an excellent introduction to the world of modelling for project finance (which is so different from other types of financial modelling).
The book is filled with suggestions on how to build your model from the ground up, so that the model is robust enough to accomodate virtually all types of sensitivity request. By following the guidelines in the book, you will significantly reduce the number of times you will say "the model can't do that".
The book comes in 4 volumes, the first giving an overview of modelling for project finance, the second explains the different model sections and suggestions for the optimal layout eg: tax, cash, debt, Balance Sheet, etc. The third section gives tips on debugging (who has time?) and presentation. The final section presents a sample model for review.
I highly recommend this book. I can say that the tips and tricks learned from this book have saved me countless hours of sleep AND possibly many problems with my models.
If you are a serious project finance modeller, you should consider taking the author's 3 day course covering similar material. With the course AND this book, you might actually get a life. Both are well worth the money.

Gustavo Ghidini highlights the deficiencies in studying each of these areas of law independently and argues for a more holistic approach, insisting that it is more useful, and indeed essential, to consider them as interdependent. He does this first by examining how competition and intellectual property (IP) converge, diverge, and inform one another. Secondly, he assesses how IP law can be interpreted through the guiding principles of competition law – antitrust and unfair competition – and within the overarching principle of free competition.

The book traces the evolution of modern IP law, which it claims is marked heavily both by ‘over-protectionist’ trends – such as the extension of copyright law to technological fields, where it trespasses on the territory of patent law – and by attempts to monopolize the achievements of basic research, such as in the example of biotechnology. Through an examination of such emerging issues as access to standards of information and patenting of genetic materials, the author makes a clear case for a reading of IP law that promotes dynamic processes of ‘innovation by competition’, and ‘competition by innovation’, with related benefits to consumer welfare such as wider choices, greater access to culture and information, and lower prices.

This is my personal journey through one of the greatest warrior and leadership cultures of today, which ultimately provided me with defining leadership characteristics and the skills of a serious warrior. Nobody is born a great leader, they are made through hard work and determination. My first Indian name given to me by the medicine man when I was a child was Bobcat. As I grew and became a young man, I returned home from my first combat experience and was given my warrior's name, Evergreen Mountain. I am an American, first and foremost, but I am also a Pueblo and Yaqui Indian. I am a former member of the US Army’s 18th Airborne Corps, 75th Ranger Regiment, and spent most of my career as an operational member of a Special Missions Unit under the United States Army Special Operations Command. These are some of my most important leadership lessons learned from the battlefield of the war on terror. It is my sincere hope that this book serves as a resource and a compass, providing direction and guidance for individuals seeking or in a leadership position.

About the Author
Rob Trivino is retired from a long career in the United States Army. During his time on active duty he was assigned to several units; he spent the majority of his time in service assigned as an operational member of a United States Army Special Missions Unit under the United States Army Special Operations Command. Rob has extensive peacetime and wartime leadership and tactical experience, leading small teams and larger maneuver elements in combat at the ground tactical level. He has deployed on multiple combat missions to the Balkans, Afghanistan, and Iraq and has served as a Sniper Team Leader, Operations Sergeant Major, and both Assault and Sniper Element Sergeants Major. In his final assignment, Rob served as a senior enlisted advisor for a multi-service organization supporting the special operations community. Rob's awards and decorations include the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, 5 Bronze Stars (2 for Valor), and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. The BEST book on leadership I have ever read

I have read a great many books on management, leadership, motivation, etc over the years, as well as many biographies/autobiographies of special operations soldiers. I also graduated from one of the top business schools in the country that claimed to produce leaders (and does, but not because of what is taught). I can tell you with all sincerity none of the above addresses TRUE leadership the way Robert has and the best part is he keeps it simple and accessible--straight to the point, no BS. This is not a book on the military or military leadership--it is on leadership period, the military aspects are only used to illustrate his points. If you're looking for a military story there is some of that in here but you'll be disappointed if that is ALL you are seeking. Everyone should read this book, not just "leaders". Even if one is not in a leadership role, everyone needs to lead his/her own life! We are social creatures by nature and every social interaction requires the skills and methodology contained in this book. It doesn't matter if you're a CEO or a stay at home parent, you WILL benefit from this book. I come from a very long line of military on both sides of my family. I learned my leadership style (very similar to Robert's) from my father, who credits the Navy for his very successful financial career. I have been quite successful in my own career by following the same tenets of leadership Robert so brilliantly presents in this book. This year I have trained with several former Green Beret and Delta operators, every one of whom is first rate! While Navy SEALs get a lot of press, and I've known a few, I have found Delta guys have the most to offer in so many areas. These guys are not ego driven as a rule, in fact the vast majority are extremely humble, as is Robert. I have had the distinct pleasure of meeting men who served with Robert, men who are legends in their own right, tell me Robert's legacy and influence in Delta is profound. Buy this book today, you will be thoroughly engaged and it may change your life. I feel so strongly about it that I am buying several copies on my own dime to give to friends and coworkers.

Special operations soldier shares his hard earned experiences

Rob Trivino shares his hard earned leadership lessons with anybody willing to work hard to become a more effective leader. This is a great book and hard to put down. If you are looking for a shortcut to appearing to be a leader, this is not the book for you. Rob demonstrates that to become a better leader you must become a better person. Character is at the core of Rob's leadership principles. Rob is a very humble guy with a tremendous amount of credibility. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

After having served in the Marine Corps and currently assigned to a tactical unit for a large police force, one would think that leadership would be a natural skill. However, like any other skill, leadership needs to be cultivated, practiced and refined. Rob Trivino's book gives you a no nonsense view on how this came about for this humble hero. This book gives you real life experiences that every new military recruit, policeman, or business manager can use to improve their own role as a leader or start to build those important skills. The book keeps you wanting to read page after page, and in the end, leaves the reader reflecting on their own performance. This reader is in full agreement that leaders are made, and this book gives clear direction on what it takes to achieve that goal. As stated earlier, this book is a must have for any person in a potential leadership position.

Base for International Women Writers Resolution to the UN Wo

It is difficult to understand why this book is out of stock. Olsen's ideas encouraged International PEN Women Writers' Committee(of which I was then Chair) to hold two regional conferences on censorship and self-censorship of women. It was also part of the inspiration for the resolution forwarded by our delegation to the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. Women writers have been aware for centuries about women's silences, but it was generally acknowledged that there was little support for the perspective of it being institutionalised ,deliberate ,and encouraged by societies. Those who wish to find evidence for the phenomenon and examples of women who broke the silence would find much to interest them in'The Book of the City of Ladies' by Christina de Pizan, a Fourteenth Century Italian writer(and widow) at the court of the King of France.Christina broke many of the taboos of her day. It is remarkable that women's censorship and self-censorship(silences) are not the subject of doctoral theses in women's studies' departments. Olsen provided women everywhere with a great service in writing this book. Read it,I urge you to do so.It will make you reflect ,if you are a woman, on your own silences. If you are a man with an open mind, it will probably make you wonder how such a continual human rights' abuse has continued for so long.Perhaps the answer is because it is a silent one.The scars are and have been felt on the souls of our mothers,sisters, and daughters of blood and spirit throughout the millenia of recorded human history.Simply because they do not inflict physical hurt, does not mean that such silent scars do not constitute abuse.Olsen's book,'Silences',did much to set the record straight. I , as a woman writer, am grieved, at both the intellectual and emotional levels, that such a valuable record should go out of print.It is ironical that in the 'great age of gender issues' such a book is no longer available.

SHOCKING TO LET THIS BOOK GO OUT OF PRINT

This book has long been important to my students at Vermont College, the nation's only campus devoted to adult learning. Adult students who haven't before seen the role of gender, class and race in their lives suddenly understand why it's taken them a while to get to school, to discover they have something to give the world, and that the world isn't equally welcoming to the perceptions of everyone. To share this predicament with writers like Melville and Woolf and Poe is for many a life-changing experience--both depressing and liberating. That Olsen's brilliant connections can no longer be easily accessed--this is itself an example of the kind of silencing that has discounted and erased artists' insights and contributions over the centuries. Olsen's book is a classic! Bring it back!

These essays have had a profound impact on my own work.

I am not shocked that this wonderful work is out of print -- it's simply history repeating itself. But I do think we should work very hard to get it back into print, probably by one of the small feminist publishers, such as The Feminist Press or Aunt Lute or Spinster -- because they are faithful to their books. However, until that happens, those looking for the essays will find many of them reprinted in various anthologies, including the title essay, "Silences: When Writers Don't Write" in IMAGES OF WOMEN IN FICTION: FEMINIST PERSPECTIVES ed. Susan Koppelman, Popular Press, 1972, and still in print and available from the publisher.
