Marianne had no idea that the little bauble she found inside an ancient Egyptian obelisk was anything more than a simple piece of jewelry. Moments after donning it, she realized it was far more than that; the ankh grants her the magical ability to control the size of any man’s cock! By simply making eye contact with the opposite sex, she can cause his manhood to grow to eye-popping proportions - or to dwindle down to pathetically small size.

Needless to say, Marianne has little to fear from any man now; she can make his most secret wish come true, or she can make his worst nightmare a reality. It’s just her luck that she gained this ability in the middle of an otherwise fairly boring date - but that’s about to change for them both. She takes charge of both the situation and her date, Matt, by making his cock grow to an epic size - but if he doesn’t pleasure her, she threatens to make him smaller than ever before! What’s Matt to do?

In Chapter Two, Marianne meets Aaron - an Army engineer who’s big and impressive in all places but one. Fortunately, that’s something Marianne can help him with, but there’s a condition - she has to be the first one to experience his new endowment. Join her as she and Aaron have the night of their lives - and Marianne accidentally overuses her special power. Aaron will gain a truly legendary tool, bigger than she even thought possible!

China Sea, by Stanton Swafford

Working undercover overseas is the furthest thing from Roy Mancini's mind. Then he responds to a “classified ad from heaven,” seeking someone to set up and run a new office in Asia. At last this mysterious client is revealed to be The Institute, a human intelligence (humint) task force that reports to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. After The Institute hires Roy and trains him in the craft of espionage, he moves to Southeast Asia where he lives under deep cover as a coffee bean trader. Following the recruitment of a clandestine agent from the island of Bali employed as the radio operator on a cargo ship chartered to North Korea, Roy befriends Sasha Popov, a Russian shipping executive, bon vivant, and jazz pianist. Popov is in fact a senior KGB officer whom Roy skillfully manipulates and recruits, driving him to reveal secret information about KGB covert operations.
As dots are connected, the confluence of intelligence provided by the Balinese agent and the Russian “mole” leads to the discovery of a potentially deadly international conspiracy—and leaves Roy Mancini to prevent a terrorist plot of catastrophic proportions.

Excellent first novel - "Thriller"!
By Diane C Wilson
China Sea is a good first novel that moves quickly. Stanton Swafford smoothly develops his characters and it is interesting to see how Roy Mancini makes good use of his background and talents to successfully navigate the world of espionage. The sense of danger underlies the action as Roy finds a way to work with “suspicious” characters in order to fulfill his mission. I enjoyed the descriptions of the Southeast Asia cities and the local cultures. Roy used his knowledge of the ethnic and religious customs to enable him to move around somewhat safely and he used his ability to speak the Indonesian language to increase his chances of success.

Malacca feels like a special place and Stanton Swafford shares the atmosphere of the local settings in such a way that you understand why Roy Mancini enjoys his journey as he travels to accomplish his mission. Roy makes use of his musical talents especially when he takes on the challenge of recruiting Sasha Popov. Sasha is especially dangerous but Roy is up to the toughness required of him. He is also a good judge of character which helped him survive in this tough milieu.

I would recommend this book to those who like a good thriller with elements of danger and relish the cultural tidbits that are sprinkled throughout the story. Sex and violence give the story reality and add to the tale. If you like sailing and music, you will enjoy how the author uses them to add depth to the action. The author’s background gives his story atmosphere and clever twists. I look forward to the next book.

the exquisite hotels like Raffles in Singapore
By robyn s merino
China Sea was a thoroughly delightful read. The descriptions of various Asian places-- Manila, Malacca,Hong Kong, Singapore, Bali; the exquisite hotels like Raffles in Singapore, the tennis and yacht clubs, the jazz clubs were colorful. The development of the character also showed real life people doing all sorts of activities. The protagonist, Roy Mancini, is multi-talented-- setting up a spy network in multiple places of Asia, playing a hard game of tennis, showing his sailboat racing skills, his jazz trumpet blowing and his ability to engage with people. The plot moves from place to place as Roy sets up his naval spying network. He interacts with all kinds of people as the plot marches along.
It's an entirely enjoyable read. I look forward to a sequel!

Hard to put down
By Akira Tsurukame
It was fun and very enjoyable. I hardly could put down once I started to read. I kept reading to the next chapter, then to the next chapter. As I did not want to end the fun and enjoyment too soon, I stopped reading before the last chapter. I waited two days and finished the last chapter. I am already waiting for the next serial where the hero Roy Mancini will show us another brilliant espionage activity. The colorful combination of beautiful blue skies and soft breeze of oceans from San Francisco, Panama Canal, Philippines, Hong Kong to Singapore, Malacca and Bali and the clandestine espionage activities between US and Russia and the terrorist group was simply superb and exciting.

From Publishers Weekly
Ten years ago, Gary Shriver dropped the marital equivalent of an atomic bomb on his wife, Mona. Within hours of being confronted by a co-worker and subsequently admonished by his pastor, Shriver confessed to a three-year adulterous affair with his wife's close friend. As a Christian, Mona, though completely stunned and devastated, hung onto the frailest of threads that their marriage might be saved because Gary was both repentant and wanted reconciliation. Despite their commitment to rebuild their relationship, Mona courageously admitted to less than selfless motives for not seeking an immediate divorce. First, there was pride, as Mona writes that she was proud of their marriage. Second, there was more pride, as she feared people would view her very likable husband as the "better one" in the marriage, thus understanding or even excusing Gary's infidelity. Finally, she hadn't anywhere to go. In characteristic fashion, the Shrivers describe their marital journey before, during and after the affair in brutally transparent diary-like essays. They tell of their decisions, their grief and their eventual healing, found not so much within the confines of the church but from what they believed was God's own merciful hand. This hopeful and constructive guide may offer exactly what troubled Christian couples require as they attempt to transform the bitterest of betrayals to trust. (May)

Recommended for betrayed Christian spouses
By Randall Nowan
Earlier this year, I discovered that my wife had been unfaithful to me while I was mobilized for duty in Afghanistan. To make matters worse, the man she had an affair with is a member of her church. With nowhere to turn after the affair was revealed, I discovered this book and found it very helpful. Because of the facts surrounding my particular experience, Unfaithful: Rebuilding Trust After Infidelity had some good points to make about how the born-again church interacts with the faithful spouse, the unfaithful spouse and the lover, since Gary's and Mona's experience with the affair and its consequences is written from an evangelical perspective and Gary's "other woman" was also a member of their church. However, because I am not a Christian and therefore not a member of my wife and her lover's congregation (Assembléia de Deus), some parts of the book were not applicable to me, particularly the parts that quoted and interpreted scriptural passages. And, although the book is excellent at describing the principals' emotions, it is a little short on how trust is actually rebuilt after an affair. It also jumps around in time, which weakens the book's underlying promise of demonstrating how trust is rebuilt after an affair.

But overall, for those betrayed spouses going through this very painful experience, particularly Christian spouses, this is a good book to read. Some of the most important points the book brings out are:

* Although you may not have been the ideal spouse, nothing ever justifies your spouse having an affair (p 72).

* The possibility of an affair frequently begins with the unfaithful spouse's anger at the faithful spouse (p 76).

* Absolute honesty from the unfaithful spouse is essential to rebuilding trust, even though short-term it causes more hurt (pp 88, 90, 136). Only with a proven track record of honesty over time can trust be rebuilt.

* The ability to deceive -- lie convincingly -- is a huge part of the destruction an affair causes (pp 95, 115). I know this personally because of the devastating effect my wife's post-affair lying had on me when I confronted her with the name of her lover and accused her of the affair. She looked me right in the eye and said "Juro por Deus que não tive um caso com ele" ("I swear to God I didn't have an affair with him"), even though I had just read an IM between the two of them where she had written about what their child would have looked like if she had became pregnant by him ("imagina so...daqui a 9 mêses nascendo uma/um menino/a com um cabelo mas crespinho e mas moreninho...que graça?!!!!").

* A marriage where adultery has occurred is more likely to have adultery occur again, the "oneness" of the marriage having been destroyed (p 97).

* Betrayed spouses should be very careful about the people they tell (p 110).

* Rebuilding trust involves avoiding all situations where there can be even a hint of deception (p 129) and requires having the unfaithful spouse answer any question the faithful spouse asks (p 136).

* If you're the betrayed spouse, and you're bored with thinking about or talking about the affair, then you've reached an important milestone to recovery (p 138).

* It is normal to want to know every detail possible about the affair -- dates, times, clothes, locations, emotions (p 140).

* To prevent a recurrence of an affair, if you're a married man, never be alone with a woman; if you're a married woman, never be alone with a man (pp 193-194). If only my wife had followed this advice from the beginning!

* "Forgiveness is not trust. These are two separate issues" (p 159). Personally, I think can eventually forgive my wife, since I too have felt the desire to cheat. Even though I've never acted on that desire, I've been much more receptive to it than having it be a simple passing thought. As for regaining my trust -- that is another matter and will take years.

I am normal for feeling this way!
By Michelle
This is a great book about a couple who have been through what my husband and I are currently going through. They describe in detail their feelings at the time of the discloser of the affair. I could relate to her feelings and share them better with my husband and he could do the same for me. We were able to open up more with each other. Someone else has been there and survived - there is hope!

Excellent book that does not blame the faithful
By Bargain_Mom_7
My husband and I loved this book. It was the first book that I reviewed and ultimately bought that did not blame the faithful. This book dealt with the realities of what happens in the aftermath. It helps those freshly in it to understand what is happening and what can potentially happen when you decide to reconcile. Some of the suggestions we did not use because they just didn't work for us but maybe they can work for you. If you want a non-clinical, first hand account of how to deal with or approach the adultery from a couple who were involved in church that does not beat you over the head, and is sensitive to challenges of rebuilding, this is definitely the book to read.

Seventeenth-Century Art and Architecture, 2nd Edition, by Ann Sutherland Harris

Written by a leading scholar, Seventeenth Century Art: Architecture, 2/e is the only text on the market that introduces students to the three major art forms-painting, sculpture and architecture, across six countries.  The text engagingly and effectively combines analytical discussions with an expansive collection of vivid, illuminating illustrations that teach students the major developments of art, painting, and architecture that emerged from seventeenth-century Western Europe, as well as the socio-political and cultural background of the period.

From the Back Cover

This important new introduction to the major developments in art and architecture that emerged from seventeenth-century Western Europe bridges the gap between the specialized study and a more general survey. Seventeenth-Century Art and Architecture encompasses the socio-political and cultural background of the period. In the process it examines the careers of the most significant painters, sculptors, and architects, and those of less well-known artists.

Italy is the logical place to begin this geographical tour of Europe, not least because it was a magnet for Flemish and French artists, and because Italian artists were highly prized by the Spanish, French, and English courts. In Bologna and Rome, Annibale Carracci and Caravaggio embarked upon a stylistic revolution that deposed the international Mannerist style. The Counter-Reformation Church in Rome offered so many opportunities for artists that the city secured its position as the most vital European artistic center.

Subsequent chapters focus on Flanders, Spain, France, the Dutch Republic, and England. The increasing influence of secular patronage is reflected in the popularity of mythological and biblical themes with obvious erotic content. Commissions that had hitherto been the exclusive privilege of the Church, monarchy, aristocrats, and major guilds now originated from upper middle-class patrons seeking portraits of themselves and their families, landscapes of their own terrain, genre scenes for their entertainment, and still-lifes reflecting their sophisticated tastes.

Major artists covered include Bernini, Borromini, Caravaggio, Carracci, Claude, Girardon, Guercino, Hals, Jones, Le Brun, Le Van, Murillo, Poussin, Rembrandt, Reni, Ribera, Rubens, Ruisdael, Steen, Van Dyck, Velazquez, Vermeer, Wren, and Zurbaran. The seventeenth century also witnessed the emergence of successful women painters such as Artemisia Gentileschi and Clara Peeters, who receive due attention here.

Covering artistic developments across six countries and examining in detail many of the artworks on display, this book demonstrates considerable breadth and depth. Reflecting the latest developments in research, it is more substantial and up-to-date than any comparable survey. Written with great clarity, knowledge, and affection, it is a true tribute to its subject.

THIS BOOK IS WRITTEN as an introduction to the most significant artistic developments in Western Europe in the seventeenth century. It is intended to inform students of art and the interested reading public about a period that encompassed the careers of many of the bestknown artists of European history. The text privileges painting over sculpture and architecture. Far more painting than sculpture was produced because the latter is an expensive medium and fewer artists took it up. Dutch, Flemish, and English patrons usually imported sculptors or sculpture from France or Italy, so their own sculpture is not covered here. French, Spanish, and Italian sculpture is covered with an emphasis on Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the transformative genius of this medium in the seventeenth century.

The achievements of Europe's architects and builders could easily have dominated everything else in the book. Because architectural history is usually taught separately in American colleges (except in introductory survey courses), this text focuses on a few key architects and monuments, and on city planning in Rome, Paris, and London. Those readers whose main interest is architecture of this period will find books such as the Pelican History of Art (Yale University Press) and Baroque (Kdnemann; ed. Rolf Toman) readily available sources of supplementary information.

This book focuses on the six countries whose art and architecture is usually taught in courses on European Baroque art—Italy, Flanders, Spain, France, the Dutch Republic, and England. There is no chapter on artists from eastern or central Europe (what remained of the Holy Roman Empire), because the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War, finally ended by the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648, did not allow any cities in these countries to provide steady patronage for native artists for most of the seventeenth century. The Habsburg court of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, where he ruled from 1576 until 1612, attracted painters, engravers, and sculptors from Antwerp, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Basle, and Milan. Their sophisticated style became the final fling of Mannerism. The court moved to Vienna in 1620. Most ambitious young artists born in the territories now called Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic left for Flanders or Italy, ostensibly to train, but many never returned; among those were the painters Adam Elsheimer, included here in the chapter on Italy, and Johann Liss from Oldenburg, who died in Venice.

The first and longest chapter is devoted to Italy. In the sixteenth century Italy became a magnet for artists from the Netherlands and France, while Italian artists were sought by courts in Spain, France, and England. The influence of Raphael, Michelangelo, and their successors soon reached Antwerp, Madrid, and Fontainebleau outside Paris. Thus, the logical place to begin our story is Italy, specifically Bologna and Rome where the Carracci and Caravaggio began the stylistic revolution that deposed an international Mannerist style and replaced it with other styles based on renewed life study and a respect for Renaissance artists least affected by maniera. The Counter-Reformation Church offered so many opportunities for artists in Rome that the city became the most important center of artistic production in Europe. Its only rivals in Italy were Bologna and Naples, the former too small to offer serious competition (although its artists were enjoying their greatest period of achievement), the latter controlled by the Spanish monarchy. Venice produced no worthy successors to Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese until the eighteenth century. Thus Rome remained the most important European city for ambitious artists until Paris gradually replaced it in the nineteenth century.

The next chapters discuss Flanders and Spain, whose developments were most directly affected by Italian art. Both were Catholic countries and Flanders (the Spanish Netherlands) was still part of the dwindling Spanish Empire. The seven northern provinces of the Netherlands had effectively been ceded to the Dutch by 1609. The economic decline that resulted from their control of sea trade in Northern Europe meant that artistic production in the Spanish Netherlands gradually declined after the deaths of Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck in the 1640s. There was not another influential Flemish artist until Antoine Watteau (1684-1721), who was born in Valenciennes (which had passed to France in 1677). There were no major architects or sculptors working in Flanders (Francesco Duquesnoy spent his working life in Rome), so these arts are mentioned only in passing.

While Spain also experienced a drastic contraction of its economic resources after 1600, the Church and the Court continued to provide substantial opportunities for painters, sculptors, and architects, notably in Madrid and Seville, and the careers of Francisco de Zurbaran and Bartolome Esteban Murillo carry the story well into the second half of the century. Velazquez made two visits to Italy but this was not typical of Spanish artists, who were less likely than their peers elsewhere to spend their formative years abroad. They usually learnt about foreign developments from prints or an occasional visit to Madrid where, if they were lucky, they might have access to the art collections of Philip IV, in which Titian and Rubens were especially well represented. Unlike their European peers, Spanish sculptors and architects paid less attention to the models offered by ancient Greece and Rome. The results are idiosyncratic and, in the case of church buildings, often spectacularly original.

The next three chapters move north from France to the Dutch Republic and finally to England. Before 1600 French artists had been strongly influenced both by the work of their Flemish contemporaries and also by that of Italian visitors working at Fontainebleau. The earlier part of the book has thus prepared the reader to understand these connections and to appreciate the evolution of a distinctive French style in painting, sculpture, and architecture during the seventeenth century. The transformation of Paris into a modern city began around 1600, so it is vital to pay some attention to its planning and major monuments.

With one exception—the new Town Hall of Amsterdam—the social and political structure of patronage in the Dutch Republic did not demand monumental buildings, and it gave few opportunities for ambitious sculptors. Printmakers and painters, on the other hand, found a huge new market among the middle classes, many of whom had enough discretionary income to form art collections. Thus, the chapter on the Dutch Republic emphasizes painting, with some attention to prints and a brief section on the Dutch adaptation of Palladian architectural models for their new churches and fancier residences.

The last chapter is devoted to England. Anthony van Dyck's presence at the court of Charles I for a decade (1632-42) transformed court portraiture by raising standards and offering a more flattering and relaxed image of the aristocracy than the stiff formulas that had prevailed before. The English continued to depend on imported talent, however, long after the death of van Dyck, except in the special field of the miniature portrait. Patronage for any other kind of painting—decorative, historical, or religious themes, landscapes or genre scenes—was slow to develop until the end of the century. The sculptors working in England tended to be foreigners too, and not of impressive originality. Only in the field of architecture did English artists emerge as rivals to their continental peers. Thus, the emphasis here is on Inigo Jones, who introduced English patrons to the work of Andrea Palladio and forever changed the appearance of British architecture, and Christopher Wren, who designed and built St. Paul's Cathedral, the largest church erected in Western Europe in the seventeenth century.

There is no simple relationship between artists' personalities and the character of their art, but knowing something about artists' lives and reading their own statements about their tastes and intentions can create empathy for work that may seem at first inaccessible. The contrast between Caravaggio's violent temper and the profound religious sentiment that he could conjure up on canvas immediately engages both specialists and the general public. Both Rubens and Poussin were serious students of the visual and intellectual culture of the Italian Renaissance and its ancient roots, but Rubens was an extrovert involved in the major diplomatic and religious issues of his time while Poussin lived quietly in Rome, working steadily except when taking a walk in the Borghese Gardens with learned friends. The differences in their personalities partly explain the differences between their paintings. Issues of competition, conflicting ambitions, and rivalries play a role in every chapter of this book. That many artists felt the need both to outdo their peers and the great names of the previous century had a visible effect on many of the works discussed here.

Whether an artist is part of the popular canon or not, this text has longer analytical descriptions of the works illustrated than is typical of introductory books. Looking long and carefully at a particular work is a skill not mastered during a survey course; a slow examination of any visual image invariably yields deeper understanding. One may well puzzle over some fascinating details in these artworks. Why does van Dyck's Christ (see Fig. 2.39) hold a bulrush instead of a stick? Why does Murillo's beggar boy (see Fig. 3.39) have scorpions around him? Why is the table between Christ and the Virgin so large in Zurbaran's Virgin and Christ in the Holy House of Nazareth (see Fig. 3.19)? Why does Vermeer's servant (see Fig. 5.56) wear clothes of such beautiful colors? The interpretations offered here may be disputed, but they will at least open a dialogue with inquiring readers.

The introduction that follows reminds readers of the persistence after 1600...

great text, lousy pictures
By Marsha Witherson
I am currently enrolled in a Baroque and Rococo art history class at my university. I was told to get this book, and I excitedly did. After reading it for a bit, I noticed a few aspects that bothered me. The text is informative and explores the artworks wonderfully. Unfortunately, in the description, the authors describe the colors of the piece and how critical they are in the piece, which would be wonderful, except for the fact that half of the images in the text are in black and white! I would have to wait until class or find the images online in order to see what they were talking about.

So, if you are looking to buy this book, just be aware that the writing and historical knowledge are wonderful, but the images are dull and mainly colorless.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Seventeenth Century Art and More...
By Gabriel
Where can the interested reader find so much in one book about the great seventeenth century masters of art such as Caravaggio, The Carracci, Bernini, Rubens, Rembrandt, van Dyck, Velazquez, Hals, Vermeer, Poussin and Claude? The answer is in the recently published text "Seventeenth Century Art and Architecture" by Professor Ann Sutherland Harris.

In this wonderfully written and very well illustrated book - there are 411 illustrations of which 176 are in excellent color - Professor Harris glides through the seventeenth century with the grace and ease of a ballerina, covering the Baroque period from its inception in Catholic Italy to its final days in the Golden Age of the Dutch Republic. Major artists and a number of less well know artists are covered succinctly, lucidly, and without pedantry or reference to obscure scholarly works. The author is so well-versed in the subject matter that she is able to convey it clearly to the general reader with almost every painting described and discussed in detail.

Orginally conceived as a college text, this book is a must read for anyone interested in the art, lives of the artists, politics, and history of the most important century in European art and culture. Although the title gives equal weight to art and architecture, much more of the art of the period is discussed than architecture, yet the reader is given a full taste of the architecture of the period as well.

This is a book that one will want to read and re-read time and time again.

Wow! What a book!
By Dina Fulmer
This wonderful book contains just about everything anyone could possibly want to know about the art and artists of the period, what they painted and why they painted the way they did, including background material on the political and economic environment in which the artists worked. Included are 410 illustrations with approximately half in color. This book will be treasured by students of art as well as those of us who are "merely" art appreciators. The writing is scholarly, but not stuffy and very accessible to any art lover. It is a book to be picked up over and over again. A real treasure that every museum-goer should own.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3-The ocean is a playground, a traffic jam, a secret hideout, and more in the 10 rhymed scenarios in this underwater tour. Each quatrain is set in white type on one page of a photographic spread. "The ocean is-/A STAGE" where "These dolphins dance and leap above/Their watery arena,/Performing like a graceful pair/Of long-nosed ballerinas." The leaping dolphins are silhouetted against an orange-suffused, darkened sky, but most views feature animals and plants beneath the waves as starfish, a toothy shark, and flowery sponges appear in turn. A small note on the verso of the title page names the pictured species. Though the book has the appearance of simple nonfiction, no other information is added, and the colorful scenes have no particular order or relationship to one another. Touches of humor soften the repetitive rhythm, and the handsome photographs offer intriguing glimpses into the watery world. Teachers might find the imagery and the album format a pleasant means of introducing discussions of ocean life.

Classic Fantasy Adventure
By pandora10585
Robert Cyr's premier work To the Fortress of Ardan is an essential addition to the modern fantasy adventure genre. Artfully crafted, this work features a wide variety of characters with plenty of slapstick humor and foreboding intuitions. Ever the suspense artist, Cyr leaves readers wondering how Janel fares on his quest, what Lady Alyssandra is up to, and whether Aspir will ever get what's coming to him. We can only hope the sequel will arrive in short order to answer these burning questions!

By Kristin L. Saban
This is an epic adventure that will get your heart pounding in the first few pages. Cyr is a masterful story teller who creates an immense, majestic and wonderful world. He weaves a tale complete with mystical creatures, beutiful landscapes and incredible battles. His characters are heroic and complex. You will see them battle side by side with comrades as well as their own inner demons. The quest will take many twists and turns and follow multiple paths. The challenges will continue to mount for our party. Cyr places the reader right along side of them and makes us feel their anticipation, anxiety and courage. This book is full of surprises, twists, and turns. It is next to impossible to put down. The Fortress of Ardan will take you on an emotional, exciting and fun ride. Furthermore it is very intelligently written. It has multiple levels, a deep evolving and continully unraveling story. But most of all it is pure entertainment and adrenaline. Only the lucky
By A. Heller
Carol Ann Duffy has the dubious distinction of being well-enough regarded, now, that former students who were CRUELLY FORCED into reading her poems will go flocking to the internet to air their wrongs. And here we are! There are four reviews from the same person who has apparently never learned how to single-click the 'submit form' button. This is not fair.

In reply:

"Not a red rose or a satin heart.

"I give you an onion.
It is a moon wrapped in brown paper.
It promises light
like the careful undressing of love."

And more like it. If that's something that grabs you by the throat and hurls you to the ground--well--that's lucky, and your life is richer for it. If it doesn't--alas!

My Study of 'Mean Time'
By Katie
Let me begin by saying that Carol Ann Duffy is a poetic genius. She stands alone in the world of poetry with an extreme confidence to tackle taboo subjects such as sex and disease etc. which other poets wouldn't dare speak about. For example; in `Litany' Duffy speaks of subjects that others don't tend to speak of in standard, conventional poems.
"where no one has cancer, or sex, or debts, and certainly not leukaemia , which no one could spell"
Some people may assume that Duffy's work represents the pessimistic views of today's society, but in my opinion, the way you interpret the poets is a personal touch to the understanding of the poems. Duffy has an extreme talent for stimulating the imagination and creativity of her audiences.
`Mean Time' reflects life experiences by Duffy herself which she interpreted and condensed into an anthology of profound poems. My personal favourite from `Mean Time' is `Welltread' as it represents schools in a stereotypical way. For example; in every school there is always one teacher that purposely attempts to intimidate his students, the one person everyone is scared of. This poem also portrays how small situations, when you are young can stay with you for the rest of your life.
"Still smoudlering"
This anthology is for you if you enjoy reading poems that are profound and have meaning. Carol Ann Duffy does not specialise in romanticism like many other conventional poets, but down-to-earth, realistic situations, which everyone can relate to in some shape or form.
I honestly enjoyed analysing this anthology of poems for my English literature A-level, but if I weren't specialising in English, I would've read `Mean Time' for pleasure anyway.
This anthology truly reflects Carol Ann Duffy's best work, and is well worth the time and money.
