China Sea, by Stanton Swafford

Working undercover overseas is the furthest thing from Roy Mancini's mind. Then he responds to a “classified ad from heaven,” seeking someone to set up and run a new office in Asia. At last this mysterious client is revealed to be The Institute, a human intelligence (humint) task force that reports to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. After The Institute hires Roy and trains him in the craft of espionage, he moves to Southeast Asia where he lives under deep cover as a coffee bean trader. Following the recruitment of a clandestine agent from the island of Bali employed as the radio operator on a cargo ship chartered to North Korea, Roy befriends Sasha Popov, a Russian shipping executive, bon vivant, and jazz pianist. Popov is in fact a senior KGB officer whom Roy skillfully manipulates and recruits, driving him to reveal secret information about KGB covert operations.
As dots are connected, the confluence of intelligence provided by the Balinese agent and the Russian “mole” leads to the discovery of a potentially deadly international conspiracy—and leaves Roy Mancini to prevent a terrorist plot of catastrophic proportions.

Excellent first novel - "Thriller"!
By Diane C Wilson
China Sea is a good first novel that moves quickly. Stanton Swafford smoothly develops his characters and it is interesting to see how Roy Mancini makes good use of his background and talents to successfully navigate the world of espionage. The sense of danger underlies the action as Roy finds a way to work with “suspicious” characters in order to fulfill his mission. I enjoyed the descriptions of the Southeast Asia cities and the local cultures. Roy used his knowledge of the ethnic and religious customs to enable him to move around somewhat safely and he used his ability to speak the Indonesian language to increase his chances of success.

Malacca feels like a special place and Stanton Swafford shares the atmosphere of the local settings in such a way that you understand why Roy Mancini enjoys his journey as he travels to accomplish his mission. Roy makes use of his musical talents especially when he takes on the challenge of recruiting Sasha Popov. Sasha is especially dangerous but Roy is up to the toughness required of him. He is also a good judge of character which helped him survive in this tough milieu.

I would recommend this book to those who like a good thriller with elements of danger and relish the cultural tidbits that are sprinkled throughout the story. Sex and violence give the story reality and add to the tale. If you like sailing and music, you will enjoy how the author uses them to add depth to the action. The author’s background gives his story atmosphere and clever twists. I look forward to the next book.

the exquisite hotels like Raffles in Singapore
By robyn s merino
China Sea was a thoroughly delightful read. The descriptions of various Asian places-- Manila, Malacca,Hong Kong, Singapore, Bali; the exquisite hotels like Raffles in Singapore, the tennis and yacht clubs, the jazz clubs were colorful. The development of the character also showed real life people doing all sorts of activities. The protagonist, Roy Mancini, is multi-talented-- setting up a spy network in multiple places of Asia, playing a hard game of tennis, showing his sailboat racing skills, his jazz trumpet blowing and his ability to engage with people. The plot moves from place to place as Roy sets up his naval spying network. He interacts with all kinds of people as the plot marches along.
It's an entirely enjoyable read. I look forward to a sequel!

Hard to put down
By Akira Tsurukame
It was fun and very enjoyable. I hardly could put down once I started to read. I kept reading to the next chapter, then to the next chapter. As I did not want to end the fun and enjoyment too soon, I stopped reading before the last chapter. I waited two days and finished the last chapter. I am already waiting for the next serial where the hero Roy Mancini will show us another brilliant espionage activity. The colorful combination of beautiful blue skies and soft breeze of oceans from San Francisco, Panama Canal, Philippines, Hong Kong to Singapore, Malacca and Bali and the clandestine espionage activities between US and Russia and the terrorist group was simply superb and exciting.
