About the Author
Janice Thompson, Ph.D., FACSM
University of Bristol, University of New Mexico
Janice Thompson earned a doctorate in exercise physiology and nutrition at Arizona State University. She is currently Professor of Public Health Nutrition at the University of Bristol in the Department of Exercise and Health Sciences and is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. Her research focuses on designing and assessing the impact of nutrition and physical activity interventions to reduce the risks for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes in high-risk populations. She also teaches nutrition courses and mentors graduate research students.
Janice is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and a member of the American Society for Nutrition (ASN), the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES), and the Nutrition Society. Janice won an undergraduate teaching award while at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. Janice publishes two other nutrition books with Pearson Benjamin Cummings: the majors-level text, The Science of Nutrition (recently published in its second edition, January 2010), and the consumer-level book, Nutrition for Life, published as a second edition in early 2009. In addition, Janice co-authored Sport Nutrition for Health and Performance, with Melinda Manore (published by Human Kinetics).
Melinda Manore, Ph.D., RD, FACSM
Oregon State University
Melinda Manore earned a doctorate in human nutrition with a minor in exercise physiology at Oregon State University (OSU). She is the past chair of the Department of Nutrition and Food Management at OSU and is currently a professor in the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Sciences. Prior to her tenure at OSU, she taught at Arizona State University for 17 years. Melinda’s area of expertise is nutrition and exercise, especially the role of diet and exercise in health and prevention of chronic disease, exercise performance, weight control, and micronutrient needs. She has a special focus on the energy and nutritional needs of active women and girls across the lifecycle.
Melinda is an active member of the American Dietetic Association (ADA) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). She is the past chair of the ADA Research Committee and the Research Dietetic Practice Group and served on the ADA Obesity Steering Committee. She is a Fellow and current Vice-President of the ACSM. Melinda is also a member of the American Society of Nutrition (ASN), the North American Association for the Study of Obesity (NAASO), and serves as chair of the USDA Nutrition and Health Committee for Program Guideance and Planning. Melinda serves on editorial boards of numerous research journals, and has won awards for excellence in research and teaching. She also coauthored the Benjamin Cummings textbooks The Science of Nutrition, 2/e with Janice Thompson and Linda Vaughan; Nutrition for Life, 2/e with Janice Thompson; as well as the Human Kinetics publication, Sport Nutrition for Health and Performance, with Janice Thompson

OK content but disappointing assessment materials

I used this book in a Nutrition 101 class. The content is good, the design and graphics are helpful and well thought out. The ancillary test assessment tools were clearly a rushed job from the publisher. The online answer keys provided to the school by the publisher were often incorrect, questions were poorly written, and there were plenty of spelling errors in test questions making the tests confusing and unhelpful. These would've benefited from a copy editor and proofreader. Disappointed with the attention to detail for the price.

Thank you kindle for making it cheap

First of all, thank you Amazon for making this textbook kindle available. Half price of paper version is worth it. Now to the pros of the kindle edition...
Pros: Cheaper then paper. Yes, even if you don't have a Kindle you can read it on your computer or your phone/tablet.
Digital edition cons: Image resolution is horrible. This book features tables and full-page text-filled illustrations that are almost unreadable on digital edition. image resolution or size should be better, especially for the tables (you will be quizzed on some). Digital edition still refers to page numbers ... even though it doesn't have page numbering. "Review this on page 63 ..." or "see the discussion on page 211". This does not really help.
Digital edition has 2 licenses, so you can have it installed on your laptop and dorm computer or your phone and your laptop, etc.
Overall edition cons: The 3rd edition came out in 2011, yet it has references to sites and some phenomenon that are extinct since 2004 (like McDonald's supersize menu, and mypyramid.org site). Seriously, if you you are to come with a textbook every 6 months at least update the content, not just slap a new label and ISBN on it...

great read!

I just started reading this text book for a Nutrition class and I have to say, out of all the text books I have read in my college years this one is turning out to be one of the easiest to read. The content is clear and straight forward. The authors do a great job at giving you simple to understand descriptions and images to clarify any confusing points. They also do a great job at keeping sections from dragging on, and even add in quirky stories to break up the reading (they are pretty cheesy stories, but serve their purpose). The only criticisms I have is that the questions/quizzes at the end of the chapter don't always mirror what you just learned, and others are a bit confusing when you find out what the answer really is. Also, some information should be touched on a bit more in the main text of the book and then in more detail in the boxed off sections, such as equations etc ( I know they already do this, but if i'm going to be asked on how to convert and what not in quizzes, I would like a bit more emphasis that I WILL need to practice this a bit more, if that makes any sense at all?). However, though I am only a few chapters in, based on what I have read I would definitely recommend this book to future nutrition students/classes. It is an enjoyable and informational read!
